Lawrence made people believe in the small things, because if you don’t believe in the small things you can never achieve something big. This is a lesson for life and culture and not only for art. In my opinion, Lawrence’s works express a lot of clear messages in daily situations. He tried to paint the conflict of communication between humans. The way he painted afro Americans at that time, the color that he used, and the angles that he painted people, is really inspirational for a lot of people. Lawrence admits he didn’t put messages in his paintings on purpose he was just feeling something about a situation and that’s mostly what he painted about. Instead of using words or symbols, Lawrence used painting to express his feelings.

I think this is some kind of similar to Bearden’s works, because Jacob Lawrence and Romare Bearden, both tell a story with their artwork. They both painted about feelings, especially combined with the music of Duke Ellington and Barry Lee Hall. But in the other hand, the difference between these two artists is that Lawrence, as I mentioned, made his works clear (visible figures with certain emotions) so everyone could get the message or at least a part of it. While Bearden has pretty messy works where you really need to search for the underlying meaning.

In my opinion, Lawrence is based on existing circumstances and Bearden is based on feelings and colors. Also, Romare Bearden started painting with his experience of the afro American culture, but after a few years, he was more interested in making collages of ripped and cut photos that were found in newspapers. Romare Bearden reformed these photos into the artwork that Romare Bearden wanted to make and his statement was in his artwork.

What I really like about these American Modernist artists and musicians, is that they are telling a story and it is about how people felt during that time. Back home, in the Netherlands, there is not that big difference between black and white anymore, so this was really a culture shock for me. I am here already for five months, so I am leaned how the culture is in America. I do not really have a favorite artist between those two, they both really inspirited me when I looked up a few of their art pieces I was thinking about what the story behind it was and they made me think.
