Can you imagine having to live a life with a father who’s going down a bad path and a brother who is an alleged criminal? In Gary D. Schmidt’s Okay, For Now, Doug Switeck’s life is just like that. As the story unfolds, Doug meets people who help him see the good in his life. Anything is possible if you don’t give up. Never give up in hard times. In Okay, For Now, Lucas is Doug Swieteck’s brother. Lucas is a bully and a jerk who is pessimistic and takes every chance he has to beat up Doug. He is drafted into the Vietnam War. When he comes home, he’s in a wheelchair and has impaired vision. Because of these impairments, it was hard for him to find work.

Nevertheless, Lucas still went out every day looking for work. 'He went out in that stupid wheelchair every day the first week of April. Every day. He wheeled himself up and down every street in Marysville that had someplace where someone might get work.' Lucas has developed a good work ethic and he has changed a lot from before he was in the war. He doesn’t give up until he finds a job.

In addition, Christopher, Doug’s other brother, is accused by the whole town of robbing the hardware store. This is believed because Christopher has a reputation for doing bad things and breaking rules. Even so, Doug never gives up on his brother. He knows in his heart that his brother didn't do anything wrong. '’When the police figure out who the thief really is, and it isn't my brother, then you have to give the bird back to the library’', said Doug to Principal Peattie. Doug had found a way to kill two birds with one stone. He wouldn't give up on his brother or fill the Birds of America book.

In the book, we come to learn that Doug has yet to learn how to read. When Miss Cowper learns this, she decides to help him. Miss Cowper says to Doug, “‘There are some things in this world that we can not fix, and they happen, and it is not our fault, though we still might have to deal with them. There are other things that happen in this world that we can fix. That’s what good teachers like me are for’”. Miss Cowper doesn’t give up on Doug, and Doug doesn’t give up on learning to read. Even though things might not go your way, never give up. Lucas didn’t give up when he was looking for work, Doug didn’t give up on making sure everyone knew that Christopher didn’t do anything wrong, and Miss Cowper didn’t give up on helping Doug learn to read. In order to accomplish our goals, people need to realize that we should never give up.
