A global citizen takes action to make sure that everyone gets their basic needs fulfilled (food, water, shelter) and that all people can live in a decent level of comfort. Global citizens could volunteer work to help the people who don't have these necessities. For example, they could work at organizations that give healthcare to places and peoples that don't have it, like Unicef, The Red Cross, or Doctors Beyond Border. They also may volunteer somewhere like a foodbank or a soup kitchen, which are there to provide food for people who do not have access to it or cannot afford it. Another thing that global citizens could do to help ensure that all people get these fundamental necessities is to donate money to organizations that are trying to get food, water, and shelter to places that do not have access to these things.

They could fundraise in many ways to get money to donate, they could do a big auction to raise a ton of money, or something simple like a bake sale (which can be just as effective). Lastly, a way to take action could be to raise awareness about the subject and maybe other people will want to be a good global citizen as well and try to find new ways that they can help. Even though it doesn't seem like much, this may be the most important one because the more people aware of the issue, the more people will fight for it and then, eventually the goal will be achieved.

The products we choose to use can have positive or negative impacts on our planet. A global citizen is conscious of these impacts. When you think about how much plastic an average Canadian citizen uses each day, it's a lot. If you don't believe me think of that juice bottle you had in your lunch, the packaging on your new set of pencils that you so carelessly threw away, and even the toothbrush you used this morning. All these products are made of plastic that will never decompose. Single-use products are a major contributor to the large amount of waste we discard. Single-use products are the products we use once and then they go straight to the landfill, some examples are take out containers, plastic water bottles, paper towels, and the plastic bags you get at the grocery store.

All these products you use on an almost daily basis can be easily switched out for more environmentally friendly products. For example, you can switch out your plastic water bottle for one that you can wash and reuse. The products you use more than once can still be an issue for the environment. Just because they're used multiple times doesn't change the fact that its plastic that will end up in a landfill somewhere. An example of this is your toothbrush, it's made of plastic but it's not something you can just avoid using. One solution to this is to use a bamboo toothbrush, and no matter what the product is you can usually find a substitute. One thing that makes someone a global citizen is that they try to be as environmentally friendly as possible even if its difficult.
