Wonder Woman is a rare gem to come out from the blue corner of the superhero movie industry. It is the most successful movie released by DC Comics earning even more than Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice at the box office. It was also one of the most ambitious in terms of having a female protagonist in the midst of a genre where most of the lead roles are dominated by male actors. In the film, Wonder Woman (or Princess Diana) is played by well-renowned Israeli actor Gal Gadot. Due to this the film gained a huge following by the media as well as teenage girls as they finally had an actual face to the superhero in the form of Gal Gadot and was someone they could look up to.

The movie is set in thee World War I era. We are introduced to Chris Pine’s character Steve Trevor when his plane crashes on the shore of Themyscira, the home of the Amazonians. The Germans who were in pursuit of Steve reach the island and begin an all-out assault. The Amazonians retaliate in an attempt to defend their home but some of them perish at the hands of the German soldiers with their rifles. Antiope (played by Robin Wright), a close friend of Diana and her mother Queen Hippolyta, sacrifices herself to save Diana. Upon witnessing her death, Diana decides to head to London along with Steve so that she can end the war by killing the God of War, Ares who she believes is responsible for the Great War.

This mentality of Diana, that she could end the war by killing one man, Ares (well a God in this case) shows us that she is very naïve. This is due to the fact that she was raised on an island isolated from the rest of the world and thus has no knowledge of how politics and how the world really works. Viewers can relate to this side of Diana because all of us were once naïve little kids who didn’t have an understanding of how the real world works. We used to think that we would always be living with our parents and that school was the only thing that we had to do. But as we grew older and started high school, we began to learn from senior students, teachers, mentors, etc., that the real world is not all sunshine and rainbows. In fact, it is the polar opposite. When we graduate from high school, we go to college where we are exposed to the real world for the first time, albeit in a friendly environment. Diana goes through the same emotions and feelings when they reach London and is exposed to the outside world for the first time in her life. She is not able to understand and conform to western societies’ norms for women and questions as to why the world is like it is.

Diana, Steve, Sameer, Charlie and Chief head to the Western Front in Belgium in an attempt to stop the Germans from releasing a deadly gas there. Upon reaching the Western Front, the group learns that the Allies are pinned down by machine gun fire coming from the German trenches. The field commander informs them that the only way to the German trenches is to cross No Man’s Land which is impossible to do without the whole of the Allies being wiped out. Knowing that it is imperative that they defeat the Germans, Diana bravely charges across No Man’s Land and single-handedly clears out the German trenches allowing the Allies to push forward and liberate the village of Veld from German control. I feel that this part of the movie would be inspirational to a lot of teenage girls as they see Diana, defeat so many enemies single-handedly. It gives them inspiration and something to look up to when they face difficult times in life or when things are not going according to plan. It can help them power through those difficulties as they remember that Diana also overcame overwhelming odds, and so too can they.

Toward the end of the movie, we see Diana face off with Ares in a battle which she believes will end the war if she wins. She tries to kill Ares with the sword “Godkiller” but Ares destroys it and reveals to Diana that in fact she is the Godkiller, the offspring of Zeus and Hippolyta. He tries to convince her to join forces with him and to destroy mankind but he fails to do so as Diana remembers Steve’s sacrifice and subsequently defeats Ares with the power of…love? Anyway, we are taken back to London where people are celebrating the end of the Great War by the signing of the Armistice of 11 November 1918. Diana and her comrades are seen looking at a picture of Steve and remembering his sacrifice. The movie then shifts to the present day where we see Diana holding a picture of Steve, Sameer, Charlie, Chief and herself that was taken in the village of Veld after it’s liberation.

The fight between Diana and Ares and the reason she defeated him is where the film lost me. Personally, I feel that they could have made up so many different reasons as to how Diana was able to defeat Ares (well apart from her being the child of Zeus) but I guess some executive must have thought that this was a good idea and they ran along with it. Apart from this somewhat irrational plot point, the movie is rally good. The fact that it made upwards of $821 million globally out of which it made north of $412 million dollars in the US alone is a testament to how a good of a movie it really is. Both fans and critics alike praised this movie and for a movie coming from DC Comics, that praise is not to be taken lightly.
