How do you suppose we can accomplish challenges if we do not know our strengths or weaknesses? I heartily affirm that we have to recognize our personal strengths in order to conquer the challenges ahead. We, as humans, have our own unique qualities and abilities. As we grow, we discover new things about ourselves, including our strengths. We can use these personal strengths when dealing with life’s challenges. These challenges do not only test you, but they also strengthen your strengths. As Joel Osteen once said, “When you face difficult times, know that challenges are not sent to destroy you. They are sent to promote, increase, and strengthen you.”

In the myth, Orpheus by Alice Low, the hero’s name was Orpheus. He was the son of Calliope, one of the nine muses, and a mortal. Orpheus was given a wonderful musical talent. Whenever he played his lyre, everyone and everything stopped to listen. His wife was named Eurydice and he loved her dearly. When Eurydice died because of a venomous serpent, Orpheus used his strengths to try and get her back. However, his weaknesses got in the way of reaching his goal.

If Orpheus was aware of his weaknesses, he would have known how to somewhat prevail over them using his strengths. This story exemplifies how Orpheus used his strengths to overcome personal challenges. The first challenge was to persuade Hades and Persephone to give him a chance to reunite with Eurydice. He was able to get what he wanted because he knew how to get it through his strengths. The second challenge was to not look back at Eurydice until they were back on Earth. He failed because he was too impatient and wanted to make sure Eurydice was still following him.

I believe that Orpheus has the most interesting way in facing personal challenges because the myth not only shows us how we can use our strengths, but also the reality that despite knowing our strengths, we can fail. According to Ritu Ghatourey, “A person who falls and gets back up is much stronger than a person who never fell.” Orpheus may have failed to get Eurydice back, but he still continued to sing his songs and patiently waited to die and be with Eurydice in the underworld. This shows that he was able to conquer his weakness of being impatient. Orpheus is a great example on how our attitude should be towards the challenges we face.

To conclude, we must know what our strengths and weaknesses are, so that it would be easier for us to be able to take down the challenges ahead. As seen in the story, Orpheus knew he had that ability to move people with his music, which is how he devised his plan. Without knowing our strengths, we would not be able to realize what we are capable of doing. Without realizing what we are capable of doing, we would not be able to accomplish anything. Everyone goes through challenges, but only the strong ones get through them.
