The platform I have chosen is "children aging out of the foster care system "and "same- sex couples right to adoption." The foster care system is just a way society has chosen to deal with child abuse, neglect and no one wants. The foster care systems were designed to be a short- term solution. Many children aren't getting the help needed. The system has failed since so many children need help. When they reach eighteen, sometimes twenty-one of the children has a disability they become part of the age out population. Since the solution is short term, why not look for other places for the children to live. Same sex couples can be the answer to the problem. I don't see why the system lets a person's sexuality determine their parenting skills.

The children aging out of the foster care system are on the rise. This seems to be the population at risk in the United States today. I have estimated that there are over 20,000 children close to aging out of the system. There's many of the children have been neglected and received a wide range of abuse. This is not just a statement but just one of the many facts. I can remember growing up in the foster care system until I was adopted at the age five. I had the chance to learn a lot about many of the children in the foster care by their actions.

Many children in the foster care system reach the age of eighteen or adulthood and finally age-out. Most of the children end up homeless due to the fact they're never adopted or biological families to care for them. A child has no support or someone to care for them. They lack job training skills, lower education levels. All these issues will make the children struggle just to make it in society. Many of the aged out children move for the foster care system to the public assistance system. I believe many children of this population are more likely to become young parents, instability of all relationships and increase the divorce rate.

I figure the aging out rate will drop if we take a stand now, not in the near future. Start up a place like job corps for the children. The program can be opened to children sixteen and older. The children will have some training. The rates can also drop if same-sex couples could adopt a child. Why let same-sex couples get married in some states but not have the freedom to have a family. Heterosexual and Homosexual families have a lot in common. Both types of families are diverse and want a child to love. A person's parenting skills should never be based on their sexual orientation. I believe children living with a homosexual family would be better off than aging out. I would have wanted that if I didn't get adopted at a young age.

I think the argument that sexual orientation will hinder a person's parenting skills is wrong. Sure the child may get picked on because they have "two mommies and daddies" by the other children. A child may get picked on but still receive love from their parents. Stereotypes like if children have gay parents they will be gay. This is one stereotype that needs to be thrown out the window. How can we ever learn from a problem if it's never played out?

The two platforms I have chosen are both something I would take a stand to bring to the courts. Both platforms can help each other out. The children that never get adopted or aging out can get a home to live in with loving and caring parents. Homosexual should have the chance to start a family with children. A household the couple can't start alone. This household can be if the partners already have children. If the state can see the child is growing up in a less abusive and neglectful environment. Why let the rates of children aging out continue to go up?
