An Individual Realization on the Life of Jesus Christ

One of the most important principles I learned about Jesus Christ in this course was just how much Heavenly Father trusts Him, and thus, how much I should trust Him as well. In Mark 15: 34 it says "And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabacthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" At this moment, Heavenly Father left Jesus Christ alone on the cross. Why did He do this? I think it was to show all of us how much He trusts Jesus. If Heavenly Father trusted Jesus Christ enough to leave Him alone when He was at His weakest and could have easily stopped His own suffering and left the cross, we know that Jesus will never leave us-He can bear all of our burdens, and does so by choice. We know for a fact that we can trust Him with everything that we are.

I also really like the idea that Jesus grew little by little, and that He eventually had power over the human body, sin and unclean spirits, and the elements. Luke 2:52 says "And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man." The examples of Jesus casting out devils, healing a man with palsy, and calming the winds and the waves are all great examples of this principle. I think this principle speaks to me because it shows that I don't have to have it all together this very minute I can grow little by little. And the idea that someone else has already paved the path. Someone else has already had success, so if I just try my hardest to do like Christ did, I can succeed too. And the idea of Christ having power over sin makes all of that possible. Because no matter how hard I try, I'm going to screw up a lot. But through Christ's atonement, I can be forgiven and keep trying until I eventually make it.

Another thing I love about Jesus Christ is that He seems to follow the Spirit of the law, and not the letter. Obviously, there are some things, like baptism, which are non- negotiable. However, Jesus Christ showed that sometimes human needs take precedence over ritual law. This was shown when Christ healed a man on the Sabbath, and when the disciples ate corn from a field on Sunday (which was against the Pharisees' law). He also showed that covenants are of the utmost importance, even on Sundays. Priests would offer daily sacrifices, even on the Sabbath. Boys who were eight days old on the Sabbath were still circumcised. Jesus Christ showed us that common sense is essential, and that our covenants take precedence over everything else.

One of the last major things I loved learning about Jesus Christ is that He is not bound by human boundaries. By this I mean that He made a habit of going beyond social norms. He healed lepers (Luke 17:11-19), healed the woman with the issue of blood (Luke 8:43-48), and associated with sinners (John 4:4-26 where Jesus talked with the woman at the well). Jesus helped the people no one else would help.

He taught things that no one else had even thought to teach, such as when He taught the priests and scholars in the temple. He used a whip to drive people out of the temple who were disrespecting and making a mockery of the sacred grounds. All these things that everyone else would consider out of place or extremely socially awkward or even unacceptable, Jesus did without hesitation. This shows us what our level of dedication to the gospel should be. We shouldn't be afraid of what anyone else thinks. We should live our religion as best we can, standing up for our beliefs, helping anyone who needs help-regardless of social status.

I did not entirely meet my goal to read the scriptures half an hour every day. However, I did read the Book of Mormon every day and I really tried to make meaningful connections between the scriptures and my own life. I made prayer more of a priority, and my trust in God increased quite a bit. I took notes in church, and really tried to see the hand of God in my life. I discussed the gospel at length with my fiancé, and I used faith to get me through some extremely difficult experiences. My relationship with my Heavenly Father grew. Even though I wasn't perfect in meeting my goal, I kept my covenants and did what I could to progress spiritually. I think that's part of the reason we make goals—even if we don't achieve the goal every time, the goal at least got us farther than we would have gotten otherwise. So in that sense, my goal was a success and I'm much better for it.

As far as plans for implementing the gospel after the university, I want to keep living my religion. I want to continue to keep my covenants. Wherever I work or go to church or interact with people, I want to make a difference by doing my best to follow the example of Jesus Christ. My husband and I (we're getting married on December 23) have made a goal to go to the temple together every week, to make a habit of daily scripture study and prayer, and to keep the gospel central in our lives. As long as we keep each other faithful to that goal and to our covenants, we'll be living as righteously as we can and at least trying to do everything God expects of us.

I still haven't learned how to have a relationship with Christ, so that is something I want to research more and hopefully find an answer to soon. I know that we pray in the name of Jesus Christ to our Heavenly Father, which builds our relationship with Him. I know Heavenly Father answers us through the Holy Ghost, and I have a strong testimony of the Holy Ghost. But I just don't know how to interact with Jesus. Everyone says "come unto Christ." I'm taking the sacrament, reading my scriptures, going to church, and generally keeping the commandments very well... I know a lot about Christ, but I don't feel like I know Him personally.
