Whether or not the mentally disabled should be integrated into our everyday society and workplace is a very controversial topic. However I stand towards the side of not including the mentally disabled in our everyday society. Examples can be taken from both the book "Flower's for Algernon" and the movie "Slingblade". Karl from Slingblade is a murderer because he believed that his judgment was right. He was then sent to a mental hospital for most of his life, then after his time was over he was release back into the world but eventually was they put back in for murdering another person.

Charlie from Flowers for Algernon had really low I.Q for a 32 year old man, he was being bullied by his peers and was given the opportunity for surgery to increase his mental capacity. After the surgery he tried hard to become smarter and tried to blend in as a regular person. As time passed, people started judging him again and not accepting him because of the leap he has made in his life. An archetype that can be taken from the book to show that the mentally disabled shouldn't be integrated into everyday life is that they would be made fun of and discriminated against. The reason this archetype is valid is because in the beginning of the book the reader can tell by the actions of Charlie's peers that he is always being made fun of.

An example can be taken from the part the book when they're at a bar. Charlie and his two "friends" are talking and his two friends tell him to walk around the block. When he gets back both of them are gone and he feels as if it was a joke. Though Charlie doesn't know this is true he will later on into the book. Another archetype that can be extracted from the book to show that the mentally disabled shouldn't integrated into modern society is due to the fact that most of them can't socialize with other humans, especially women in Charlie's case. When Charlie was a kid his sister would bring a friend over to their house which would almost always end up in him getting an erection. His mom knew he was sped therefore beating him for it because she didn't know what he would do. This show's that there are people out there who don't trust the mental and would do anything in their power to get rid of them.

An archetype that can be taken from the movie to represent the side of not including the mentally disable into society is that if mental people were to be released, most likely we would just have another homeless person on the streets. In the movie Sling blade when Carl was released he came out the state mental hospital with some books and a few cents. He had no place to go, though the Supervisor did offer him a place to stay cases like that are way too rare. If this was taken into the real world what person would be nice enough to have a mental stay at their house? Who would want a mental non-hygienic person in their house? This is why mental people should not be integrated into modern society and should just be kept in mental stay hospitals.

The mentally disabled should not be included into the modern world. In both the book "Flower's for Algernon" and the movie "Sling blade" show many different reasons why and the main reason is because discrimination. Since mental people are the abnormal humans in society no one would want take them. This doesn't just go for humans, this goes for almost all living organism. This is why the mentally disabled should not be integrated into today's society.
