Schools should not have any grading, except for college admission. The overall aspect of grading in schools is something that students, parents teacher and professors take way to seriously. Part reasoning for this in high schools is for college admissions although Interviews are something that should be taken into bigger consideration. In college today their universities that are working there way towards this will pass or fail courses. For college admissions some schools ask the opinion of their entering students on if they think there shouldnt be any grades in schools. College admissions are one point why there should be grades but other than that grades should not be taken.

Grading over all is something that we depend way too much on today. Students stress and even kill themselves over it. The battles that schools have amongst the students for who is going to be the next Valedictorian is pathetic. GPA is the vocabulary of their high school careers. But what are we trying to prove with grades? College admissions depend on students every detail that might not have anything to do with what or how much you know. It could depend on your attendance, or if you are there when the teacher drops his or her glasses on the floor and you are their to pick them up. If you dont kiss butt then you dont get the grades.

A big factor that people look into about no grading is for college admissions. How can you tell what someone has achieved over the past four years if they dont have any grades to show for it? Thats what recommendations, extra circular activities and honored awards are for.

Interviews should be done for all college admissions. You dont know what kind of person you are going to get by looking at a piece of paper. You get to know how they think, who they are, and what kind of person they are.

There are very few schools with a no grading policy however they are very renowned. An example would be Sonoma State University. Here the faculty has determined that a no grading mode is appropriate when these sound pedagogical reasons exist:

A) the nature of the course makes letter-grade evaluation difficult or impossible; the faculty desires to encourage a student to explore subjects lying outside his or her perceived fields of expertise in order to experience the advantages of a broadened education; c) the student may achieve more by being free of the anxieties sometimes attendant on being assigned a letter-grade in an unfamiliar field (SSU 1).

Many schools take on the pass, fail policy for part of their no grading education. Sonoma State is an example. The student will receive credit if they pass and will receive no credit if they fail (SSU 1). Most schools are at the point were there is a few small courses were student receive a pass or fail grade. Sacred Heart University has a freshman seminar course that is required by all freshmen to take that is a pass or fail course. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign also has classes with this same policy. These courses are designed for the students who want to go into wide ranges to find a course they like without worrying about grades (Code of Policies 1). However the students are warned that on the professional level a transcript with numerous amounts of these class are less favored for a job or something of that sort (Code of Policies 1).

  • The pass-fail type of grading first started at MIT as an experiment in 1968 become final and set in 1972 (Freshmen Pass 1). This was changed again in 1990 when the credit for passing a pass- fail course was lowered (Freshmen Pass 1). There is a current writing obtaining to first year undergraduate students about the pass-fail courses (Freshmen Pass 1). The only passing grade permanently recorded by the Registrar is P.
  • The non-passing grades of D, F, O, and OX are recorded by the Registrar for use within the Institute only and do not appear on official Institute transcripts.
  • At the beginning of the sixth week of each term, instructors of first-year students notify in writing those students performing at a non-passing level that they are at risk of not passing the subject.
  • At the end of each term in the freshman year, letter grades (if assigned) equivalent to the letter grades assigned to upper-class students are provided to freshmen through their freshman advisors. Freshman letter grades may not appear on students' official internal grade reports or external transcripts and are used in accordance with guidelines established by the Committee on the Undergraduate Program.
  • First-year undergraduates may register for and receive at most 54 credit units in the fall term and 57 credit units in the spring term (excluding ROTC credit units) (Freshmen Pass 1).
  • All of this information and way of grading came from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Freshmen Pass 1). In the later 60s they decided not only to have more classes for first year undergraduate students, but too make these classes also available to upper classmen (Freshmen Pass 1).

Having no grading in schools might never happen, however we still will always have people out there looking for what students think about this topic. Jen Wood a freshman at the University of Indiana was given a Praxis series test before admissions would even accept her application to the university. This program is run by the Educational testing service. In this test there was an essay question of what you thought of the situation of trying to make schools with a no letter grading system. Assuming that this particular question has no part of weather of not you are accepted to the university this question is asked in at a variety of schools throughout the U.S.

Schools grading systems should be banned all over the world. Everyday a student feels the pressure, and stresses out over a simple grade that they might just have received. Grades are just added stress that no one needs including students. Parents, teachers and professors. Somehow a system of interviews for college admissions should be established and brought forth to everyone around the world. Furthering this process will only help students through school, college and getting good jobs. Schools should not have grades.
