Food, who in this world does not love good food? Whether it be homemade, from the grocery store, or prepared on the spot in a fast food chain people eat all the time. Though people love food, some people choose to eat the wrong type of food and it has become the number one cause of death in the United States. It is infecting the nation and is forcing hundreds of millions of Americans into obesity. Jamie Oliver, a noteworthy chef who was born in Clavering, Essex specializes as a restaurateur. He came to America to talk to the parents, coaches, teachers, etc. about the food we are putting into our bodies and the ways we can stay away from the leading cause of death in this country. By sharing accounts from people, statistics of what food does to us, and knowledge of how to help the problem. Jamie Oliver successfully portrays a strong and influential argument with the use of Ethos, Logos, and Pathos to connect to the audience.

The very first thing Jamie establishes with his discussion is mentioning a dark fact of how many Americans would die through his talk. 'Sadly, in the next 18 minutes when I do our chat, four Americans that are alive will be dead through the food that they eat' (Oliver). That immediately establishes emotional distress with the audience, hearing that four individuals would be dead from the food they eat does not leave the mind easily. He just addressed the audience that he is a regular person that has no crazy amount of wealth or education that helps him to achieve his goals and aspirations of helping children around America in their food choices.

As the talk continues, Jamie begins to show several families he had met that are currently being affected by obesity. He then begins to talk about his journey with this problem starting in West Virginia, one of the most unhealthiest states in the United States. He shows a video of a 16-year-old girl who currently is fighting for her life due to the food she ate. Jamie explains that she only has six years to live due to obesity. He then shows the Edwards family, a normal family that has a severely obese mother, stepfather, a twelve-year-old son that weighs over three hundred and fifty pounds, a four year old daughter who will be obese before starting primary school, and the oldest daughter who is far from being obese. Jamie introduces Marissa, the daughter who is the only one that is not obese. He tells us that she held both her father and uncle when they passed away, both due to obesity. The introduction of this connects to the audience on a personal level due to the family being'regular', just like most of the people in the audience. Persuasion through emotions (Pathos) allows Jamie to send a clear message to the audience and grabs ahold of them to see the true issues.

One of the most important things in any discussion is backing up the information you say with facts and visuals (Logos). Jamie begins to show the statistical side of the issue at hand with graphs, and visuals and Shows that two-thirds of the United States is considered obese and that the leading death is heart disease caused by the food we eat. He also shows how much Americans spend on food, it costs us ten percent of our healthcare bills and one hundred billion dollars a year. In ten years, the numbers are set to double all the way up to three hundred billion a year. Jamie then appeals to the audience's vision as he shows how much sugar kids are eating at schools across the nation. He brings out an entire wheelbarrow full of sugar cubes and dumps it onto stage stating, 'this is the amount of sugar your children consume in just five years in elementary school, from milk alone'(Oliver). This strategy of using a visual aid instead of just telling them the amount of sugar makes the situation more serious and easier to understand.

Imagining all the money going towards children and their education, seeing what the schools are providing them for lunch it allows the audience to process that the issue is real and is happening to their families at the very moment. At the end of his speech, Jamie states what his wish is for the audience, 'My wish is for you to help a strong, sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook again, and to empower people everywhere to fight obesity' (Oliver). As Jamie said his wish the audience stood up to applaud his message. This standing ovation can signal out the success of his speech and the message he was portraying. He summarized his speech into his mission statement to inform the audience what to do to help the future of America.

The reason for his success is through the manner at which he delivered his speech, using ethos, pathos, and logos to connect directly to each individual person in the audience. Jamie spoke in a passionate manner making sure everyone knew how important the problem at hand is. Giving the correct credibility of himself, strong and emotional accounts from people affected by obesity, and backing up his statements with factual information. The bigger picture about Jamie's speech is mentioned right at the beginning, where he let the audience know that he is just a normal guy like them and like the people he is attempting to help. This information can be taken and applied to reality when the person trying to help is just the same as the audience.
