I am writing to express my interest in your PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency program. My interest in clinical pharmacy has led me to search for PGY-1 programs that additionally offer PGY-2 programs with a focus on either infectious diseases or critical care. I believe that I am an ideal candidate for your program, as I strive to provide quality patient-centered care with professionalism and integrity while effectively collaborating with an interprofessional team. My interest in clinical pharmacy was ignited during my first year of pharmacy school when I was introduced to therapeutics and clinical applications through my coursework. This interest was reinforced as I began completing my final-year rotations. During my internal medicine rotation with Dr. Jennifer Smith, I observed the impact a pharmacist can have on a patient’s care and the role a pharmacist plays on the interprofessional team.

I witnessed how the attending doctors, medical residents, and medical students relied on Dr. Smith for information on medications and to educate them on the aspects of medications that they did not fully understand. From witnessing and participating in these roles and responsibilities, a fire was ignited in me. I knew residency was the path I want to pursue and realized that this is my life’s purpose. Whether rounding with an interprofessional team or interacting one-on-one with patients, I am fulfilled by staying abreast of clinical practice and identifying evidence-based practices to select the most appropriate treatment regimens for my patients. I am so thankful to Dr. Smith for fueling my fire to pursue a residency.

Aside from clinical experiences, I have continually pursued opportunities to develop my communication and critical thinking skills through social platforms and project collaborations in various settings. As a member of the APhA-ASP National Standing Committee on Communications, I have developed innovative campaigns to market public health initiatives and professional development opportunities to increase member engagement. Developing content for APhA-ASP, often required hours of work with other members of the committee, on top of assignment-heavy rotations. Thus, I was also able to further develop my prioritization and time management skills in order to remain deadline-oriented. As a part of Phi Lambda Sigma, I enhanced my problem-solving skills by aiding in the development of Alpha Omega Chapter’s Leadership Challenge Proposal, which consisted of emergency preparedness programming to be presented to student pharmacists and community members.

I realized the true value and rewards of community service and involvement when this emergency preparedness program was able to benefit many families in our community following the 2016 floods that affected Louisiana. With active participation in multiple organizations, I have acquainted myself with multiple areas of pharmacy and properly managed my time throughout pharmacy school. Along with the fore mentioned, these skills will be key to my success as a member of your interprofessional healthcare team. Comment by argrezaffi@yahoo.com: May not need this sentence?

With the University of Colorado Hospital modeled as a teaching hospital, the opportunities to continue developing my leadership and mentorship skills are of significant importance to me, as evidenced by my previous leadership experience and the completion of an academic elective. Finally, in regard to research, I have analyzed the utilization of antibiotics for spontaneous bacterial peritonitis prophylaxis in adult patients treated for variceal hemorrhage. The results from this analysis suggested a need for the creation of a standard order set to reduce variation in prescribing habits and align practice with evidence-based medicine.

My research experience will be imperative in continuing to pose clinical questions and analyzing current practices in order to develop new practices that improve patient care. I hope to continue similar projects as a resident in your program. Given my goals to optimize patient-centered care and collaborate effectively with members of the healthcare team, I am well suited for your program and your hospital’s mission to promote individual and community health, and most importantly, to improve lives in a culture dedicated to quality and safety.
