The ability for certain environments to evoke strong feelings of happiness, sadness, joy or rage was evident in my last meeting with my daughter’s schoolteacher. My 8-year-old daughters suffers from ADHD and experiences an array of symptoms, including of anxiety, restlessness and troubled sleeping. However, her maturity in school affairs has gradually improved over the course of three years, as I receive numerous compliments from teachers and staff about her attitude.

One incident that transpired was at elementary school when I was notified by the teacher to schedule an appointment. I readjusted my work schedule to attend the teacher meeting on a Tuesday afternoon. The sky was crystal clear as the sun shone magnificently throughout the day. I walked into the school’s front office and was greeted with smiles and a warming welcome from the lady at the front desk. I waited promptly for 10 minutes or so while I saw numerous children being escorted in and out of the office. The office was freezing cold, the phones were ringing incessantly, and adults and children were walking frantically across the halls. The atmosphere brought chills to my spine and brough back memories of the old days when I was in school. I can vividly remember our group of around 30 kids packed in one room: sitting on our extremely uncomfortable desks, writing the most tedious essays, facing sporadic rage from the teacher, and staring at the clock incessantly, praying for our misery to end. I also recalled the heavenly afternoons in the playground, chasing each other with relentless energy and endurance, with our youthful bodies and infinite enthusiasm.

On that Tuesday afternoon, in the front office, my mind and heart revisited the happy, sad and uncomfortable moments of those infinite number of school days. I recalled hundreds of names faces in those 10 or so minutes of sitting in that freezing office. It is so intriguing how the mind can replay age-old incidents and events that occurred decades ago and do it with such precision. After waiting for those 10 minutes, I was prompted to make my way to the teacher’s classroom on the second floor of the building. I walked up through the halls and up the stairs, gazed through the windows and heard the teachers chatting. I arrived at the teacher’s classroom was greeted with much enthusiasm and a loud joy.

We sat down and we discussed my daughter’s academic progress. She informed me how proud she was of my daughter’s growing maturity, learning capability, willpower and behavior; and gave me infinite praises about my mother support. We had a compelling conversation that lasted about 30 minutes and discussed her progress, local politics, old memories and changes in the school system. Personally, I left the appointment feeling satisfied by the infinite words of wisdom and praise that she showed. The afternoon, brough back old memories, visuals and strong emotions that shook me to the core. I learned that the mere exposure of visiting a certain environment can bring back an avalanche of memories. From then on, I acknowledged the power of allowing the external atmosphere to influence the minds’ eye and allow it to run wild and free.
