Could you imagine a world without social media or social networking sites like Facebook, Xanga or Twitter? Our generation has grown so used to the luxury of staying connected to the whole world via these sites that most of us wouldn't be able to cope without them. But although these sites have had good intentions - like "to instantly connect people everywhere to what's most important to them", or "giving people the power to share and make the world more open and connected" - some users have lost sight of the real purpose. Firstly, I will talk about one way social media has improved many people's lives by providing a route of communication between friends and family in different countries. Second, I will inform you about the way social networking is being misused. Thirdly, you will learn about how people use social media as an application of their social skills through the internet.
I believe that social networking sites have both positive and negative aspects to them. One of the best things about social networking sites, like Facebook, are that they help you keep in touch with friends and family that live in different countries, or just far enough away that you can't visit them on a regular basis. These sites provide a route of communication for any and all kinds of relationships. Additionally, calling your friends and family isn't always ideal because of time zones. But thanks to Facebook, you don't always have to be online to talk to your family. You can always leave them a message or a wall post telling them how your life has been since the last time you've seen each other. This is one reason social networks are such a good resource for communication.
There are also negative effects of these sites. Many people are getting addicted to these sites. These people aren't using the sites for their original purpose, which was to connect with people. Rather, some people are spending their time on these sites developing online profiles, playing games, using applications, or even going as far as to make virtual dates. Likewise, a number of people would only talk to people online, for example, they would rather send you a message than to pick up the phone, or talk to you in person. Furthermore, staying home on the computer can often lead to the inability to apply social skills in real life. Since social networks are such essential parts of almost everyone's life, people should be informed on the pros and cons of the sites.

Another one of the benefits social networks provide is that they help you make friends. Facebook makes it easy to meet new people based on common interests or mutual friends. By doing this, people generally accumulate more friends on these sites than they would have on their own. So, users who use social networking for the initial purpose and as a supplement to their regular social life actually end up gaining a more extensive and diverse group of friends. In a way, social networks help you start and build relationships within your own niche. Gaining friends is one of the most positive aspects of social networking sites, and is the main reason that they're so popular today.
There are many negative and positive aspects about social networking. While some people rely heavily on the technology of today, others would rather meet new people on their own. People today rely heavily on social media and social networking sites to get news and to stay connected, in general, but these sites have both positive and negative aspects. Some positive factors of social networking are that you can keep in touch with friends and family, as well as make new ones. But, if you use them improperly or grow too fond of social media, you may not like them as well as you originally had. In the end, it's all up to you to decide what you want to do. If you end up living on your social network page, then these sites may not be for you.
However, if you use it as a supplement to your social life, you will end up loving social networking sites.
