I was influenced to be a physical therapist assistant by being a patient. I went through physical therapy for a sports injury; therefore, they treated me to strength my arm and get it back to normal. The opportunity to see and experience what a physical therapist assistant does helped influence me to want to do this as a life time career. I want the opportunity to help people the way the physical therapist assistant helped me. Just the fact knowing and seeing someone to progress better with their physical injury would give me satisfaction because I know I’m bettering their life.

The first day I visited the physical therapist assistant for my sports injury was very interesting. He asked me what exactly happened to my arm and I explained that I keep throwing it out in softball. By telling him that and him feeling my arm he knew what was wrong with it, and he started me on ultra sound treatments and did massaging. Furthermore, I started doing exercises to strength my arm to where I won’t throw my arm out anymore. I went to him till my arm was completely stable and able to throw a softball without throwing my arm out. That experience of seeing him wanting to see me get better and to help me get my arm back to normal was great. It inspired me to want to do the same for someone else.

Therefore, by experiencing some of the things a physical therapist does I started doing volunteering hours the end of my senior year of high school. I planned to apply for the Physical Therapy Assistant program at Washington State Community College after I graduated high school, so I started my volunteering hours at an outpatient facility first. When I went there for volunteering hours it gave me an overall out look at what they do. I got to interact with the patients and got to experience the work a physical therapist does. I thought I had a set decision on working in an outpatient facility after school, but the more places I volunteered at or visited my interests changed. I started liking everywhere I would go. Till here recently when I did my volunteering hours at Harmar Place a nursing home facility it changed my outlook. I became very fond of the place and how the physical therapists perform their work there. I became attached to the patients and therapists when doing my hours there I really enjoyed it and prefer working in a facility like Harmar Place. I enjoyed volunteering a lot it helped me to make my final decision to be a physical therapist assistant.

The career of being a physical therapist has been my dream career. I had my mind set on this career since my junior year of high school. I know this career is a great opportunity for me and my future; therefore, I will do my best to succeed. I never thought by having a sports injury would have ever influenced me to decide on what I want my life time career to be, but it did. I would honestly say I am glad I got that sports injury it has had a major impact on my life and my future.
