Celebrities and Role Model

1. "Celebrities have a tremendous influence on the young, and for that reason, they have a responsibility to act as role models. " I agree with the opinion that the celebrities have a responsibility to act as role models. Celebrities have a special talent that most average people can not do; they are athletes, actors, actresses, and singers. They have seen and heard by millions through television, movies, radio, and the internet. And they may be inspiring to the young who dream of singing, or acting, celebrities have the spotlight on them because of their high status.

In addition, they are not treated like normal people because they have money, fame, and glory. Their popularity is worldwide, and there are millions of children look up to them. Role models can affect children life in so many ways. The young are following the celebrities not only their dress, but also the behaviors and attitude. For example, the children will want to try the smoking and drinking if the celebrities are always appearance themselves as smoker or drunker.

On the other hand, if the celebrities are doing things for the environment, politician, and making the changes for the better will effect and enhance the children to have brighter mind and well-manner. Charles Barkley, a former star on the Phoenix Suns, once said, “I am not a role model. Just because I dunk a basketball doesn't mean I should raise your kids. " Even through, celebrities have a tremendous influence on the young, I also believe that it is the parents’ responsibility to discuss the celebrities’ culture and keep the communication open with children.

Are Celebrities Being Good Role Models or Are They Setting a Bad Example for the Teenagers?

Younger generations are getting brainwashed by these so called celebrity role models that think they are setting a good example for these young teenagers, where-as it is actually getting backfired. These celebrities have started to ruin our society with people are acting like copycats, because they think if celebrities can, well so can I. But these celebrities haven’t always been bad, they have had a stage in their career where they were good role models, but then their career starts to go downhill, with drugs, alcohol and even anorexia.

Lindsay Lohan was worthy of our admiration when she was younger playing in movies called the parent trap, and Freaky Friday, who didn’t look up to the young Lindsay? On 8th of October 2005, it was said that Lohan had tried pot once but did not like the side effects, “I’ve seen how it messes families up. If I hadn’t experienced that, I may have gone down a different route. ” However this did not stop the young girl from using drugs. All Lohan is famous for now is, her unhealthy habits, family problems and drugs. Who wants their child to look up to that?

A well known couple that had an affair are Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, this happened while they were shooting Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Celebrities like this couple set bad examples in relationships. Children are going to grow up watching their favourite celebrity cheat on their partner, marry them and then wait until someone younger comes around. Is that what we want our children to watch and hear about? Or do we want them to grow up and end up in a healthy relationship? Miley Cyrus is a good girl gone bad. This young celeb started off on the Disney channel staring in the well known show Hannah Montana.

She was a huge success, with many fans giving her their support, and then she did something outrageous that put a halt to her career, putting half naked pictures of herself online. What next? Is she going to be the next Lindsay Lohan? Or is she going to turn her life around? With not many good celebrity role models out there making the right decisions, it is very hard to find a good role model among them. Although there are some good celebrities, including Anne Hathaway and Taylor Swift which make good impressions on young teens.

These two stars are massive role models and so many people look up to them. More people look up too Taylor Swift though because she is young herself and she can relate easier with her young fans. What are we supposed to do now? Hide the television from our children so they can’t see what their favourite idols are doing? It’s up to the celebrities to stop what they’re doing and think about what they are doing to the younger generations and how it’s going to affect them and others around them with their actions, and it’s up to the parents to do what’s right for their children.

Informative Essay on Celebrity Role Models

Today’s teens are bombarded with images and activities that don't mirror their lives from hit teen-TV shows like "The OC" and "Gossip Girl" to the multitude of entertainment programs and features in magazines. Today's media obsessed society often leads students to believe all they need to 'be cool' is be thin, blonde and wear the latest designer clothes. The UGLY program aims to help young adults self-esteem by using celebrities, as they know that young people look up to celebrities and their identity is reflected on them. Sometimes this is a good thing and other times it is a bad thing and this is why celebrities need to function as a role model to their audience because of today's celebrity-obsessed society. I plan to expand this theory and reasons behind the celebrity-obsessed society.

Celebrities now know that they have a function as a role model to their fans if they want to keep their celebrity status. They have a responsibility now, that celebrities did not have many years ago. The mass media however, play a big part in this as, if the celebrity is not read about then society will loose interest in them and move on to the next influence. The media can make or break a celebrity and can form a celebrity out of nothing. They also play a big part in exposing celebrities and finding out 'who they really are'. This is another reason our society is so interested in celebrities to show that they are 'just like us'. And celebrities know that any exposure is good exposure and sometimes will try and get into the tabloid newspapers as much as possible as this then can improve their careers as a celebrity. Whereas other celebrity's like to rebel as they are uninterested in their celebrity status but all celebrities can function as role models and this can be bad for their young fans.

Today's mass media society gives reasons why what we read or what we see on television has become our main influence into the world. We watch news and we read the news and we believe what we are told with no questions asked and this is how the media can choose what they discuss on television without the public questioning whether the information is correct or not. Luckily with the invention of the internet we can find alternative news stories discussing different opinions on the subjects if need be. Celebrities are also shown a lot in fashion and gossip magazine's but, instead of being 'exposed' are shown at their best and informing the public what dress they are wearing or what designer they are sporting. This is also an influence in society but is good for the role model function of celebrities.

There are good and bad role models in society. Some were once good role models turned bad and then from bad to good. This is all from the media exposure of their lifestyles. Certain celebrities that are recent high interest in the media are celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and Amy Wine house. All these celebrities came about through music but are now just a common face in society and the media and are not so much discussed as their musical talents. A lot of these celebrities act as role models to children and young people and when the media influences them for instance Amy Wine house and drugs it can reflect bad on them. Charlotte Church has grown up in the media eye and children have modeled themselves on her but yet again the media try to portray her as someone bad.

Children's presenters or child celebrities need to be very careful about the way they go about their everyday lives. Children and young adults influence themselves on celebrities so much and with the media exposing and being interested in their everyday lives it's harder to keep things secret if they do something bad or have a bad habit. In my essay I want to discuss certain news stories from children's role models that have changed perceptions and that may change the way their fans think as people. This can be very dangerous for future society.

Celebrity Role Models

Supported by the advances of technology, fans are increasingly closer to their admired celebrities than times ago. The fact that celebrities are considered role models and inspire many people is not new. For a long time, many people have been looking up to celebrities as role models and imitating their styles, interests, and attitudes. Although some think that celebrities are appropriate role models for young people, the majority of people believe that celebrities can negatively influence their admirers harming their education.

Some people feel that famous celebrities can inspire their admirers and influence them to imitate celebrities style and attitudes; however, there is much evidence as famous actors involved in crime or drugs scandals confirm that it can be more harmful than beneficial. A recent scandal involving the famous actress Demi Moore who has been treating in a rehabilitation center for both alcohol and drug addiction illustrate the negatively effect of celebrities been consider role models.

Opponents who agree that celebrities are appropriate role models for young people claim that just as they achieved a successful career they can help people to conquer a promising career too. However, some crucial factors must be analyzed previously to understand how they reached this prominence position in society. Research show that the majority of U. S. celebrities in the past 20 years came from a rich, important, and famous family.

These celebrities have a notorious successful career but the merit should be destined to their past generations. The final argument advanced by opponents in favor to consider celebrities as role models for young people is that how they are always well informed of updates, imitate their style can be a good way to be conform with fashion. However, the media dictates the rules follow by celebrities, and not always their style match with the followers both personality and financial condition.

It should be evident that the arguments for inspiration in celebrities are not valid. The society needs to rescue the basic principles to consider parents, religious leaders, and brave people who are fighting for good causes as a real role model and source of inspiration for their lives. Therefore, in my opinion, the people who prefer do not follow the media celebrities attitudes are are free and happier than the others who try to imitate famous celebrities.

Jesus as a Role Model

Today I will be presenting my speech to discuss why Jesus is the role model for Christian life. The Christian tradition has viewed Jesus as the perfect role model because he was sinless. Jesus lived his life providing principles, teachings and messages that are to be emulated by his followers. These teachings are evident In all aspects of Christianity and have become the foundation for Christians as to how we are to live our lives.

Many texts throughout the New Testament further exemplify the understanding of Jesus as the reflect role model, including John 13:15, "For I have given you an example, that you also should do Just as I have done to you. " The key components of Christian life include love, forgiveness, prayer and compassion. These components have all been developed from the way Jesus carried out his life Through Jesus' life, he spread teachings of unconditional love and forgiveness.

Jesus taught that forgiveness Is central to the relationship between God and humans. Unconditional love and forgiveness are closely related to each other, because without originates, It Is Impossible to love unconditionally. As Jesus suffered on the cross, he asked for the forgiveness of his executioners, which can be found In Luke 23:34, "Father forgive them; for the know not what they do. " This Is the greatest example of unconditional love and forgiveness, and as Christians, we aspire to be as loving and forgiving as Jesus.

Another example of Jesus' teachings of forgiveness can be found in Mark 1 1 :25, "And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins". Through this quote we are taught to not just act as though we have forgiven someone, but to truly forgive them. What can also be understood from this is that only those who practice this teaching of Jesus can fully receive God's forgiveness.

The life of Christians includes the practice of forgiveness in order to be able to love others unconditionally, as well as be forgiven by God. Jesus Is also our role model as to how we pray. Jesus' life of prayer consisted of praying before meals, giving thanks, praying for others, shared prayer and praying fore making important decisions, but his most valued form of prayer was private prayer. An example of Jesus' teachings of private prayer can be found in Matthew 6: 5-15.

During this, Jesus says "But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. " It is also within this reference where Jesus teaches us the Lord's prayer. Although he was half divine, Jesus was also half human whilst on earth. Therefore, he was subjected to the same temptations, frustrations and sorrows that Christians are also affected by in our lives everyday. Through all these struggles that Jesus encountered, he prayed to God in private for help and strength to complete the task he had been given.

We as Christians pray following this example of Jesus life of prayer and teachings of private prayer when we are faced with our own hardships and are in need of guidance. Jesus has taught us how we are to pray through his own to why Jesus is a role model to Christians. In the process of his teachings, Jesus has showed that human beings can be holy wrought their compassion towards the poor, marginal's and dispossessed. Jesus' had immense compassion towards these people of need and reacted through acts of mercy.

We as Christians have learnt to be generous, giving and to be empathetic throughout our lives by the examples of Jesus' compassion. Also as followers of Christ, we are encouraged through Jesus' teachings to know our obligations to assist those in need in order to be Christians. This teaching can be found in Luke 18: 22-23, where Jesus told a young, rich ruler that he was to "Sell all that you own and stubbier the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.

But the young man did not have the qualities to be a disciple of Jesus, because he showed that his love for his riches was greater than his love for God and was reluctant to give up his possessions. Jesus' examples of compassion for the poor, marginal's and dispossessed have shaped how Christians practice acts of mercy towards people of need. These acts of empathy are one of the many reasons why Christians view Jesus as the perfect role model.

Jesus is the ultimate role model for Christian life because he loved unconditionally, he forgave, he lived a life of prayer, he was compassionate towards the poor, marginal's and dispossessed as well as many other things. As well as living his life practicing these qualities, Jesus has also taught these principles to his followers as a guide to live their life by. These teachings, messages and principles are imitated through the lives of Christians as a way of following the commands of God and have become the foundation as to how we are to live our lives as his followers.

The Misconception of a Role Model and the Relation to an Athlete

A role model: a noun, meaning a person whose behaviour, example, or success is or can be emulated by others, especially by younger people. An athlete: also a noun, a person who is trained in exercises or contents involving physical agility, stamina, or strength; a participant in a sport, exercise, or game requiring physical skill. Two entirely different words, and two very different definitions, yet one must wonder; could it be that these terms may in fact be very closely related? Thus bringing us to the much debated issue of whether or not athletes can be positive role models.

Over the years, this has proved to be an extremely opinionated issue for many. The truth is, an athlete is simply “a person”, and if we have people who are our role models, then yes, athletes, being people, can be positive role models too. However in today’s society there is a huge misconception surrounding the term “role model” and therefore there are many mixed opinions regarding this topic. Firstly, could it be that our expectations of athletes that are perhaps too high, thus preventing us from seeing the “positive-ness” in them.

Secondly, in such a materialistic world, people often forget the difference between what they want and what they need, and therefore if the world wants to see prefect role models, with money, talent, and beauty, then they will look for that in people like athletes, because quite frankly, people are constantly in search of that “good life” concept. Lastly, there is a reason why the word role comes before model. Our role models are only models in a certain role, or as one may say forte. Athletes are role models in our society, however only in the role of an athlete, and we often forget that.

Consequently we may need to re think our definition of a role model before we determine whether or not athletes can be considered positive influences on our society. Today, when a high-status athlete is accused of a serious offence or of cheating the game, of course it is news and newsworthy! Take Michael Phelps for example; no matter how many world records he breaks in the future, there will always be someone there to bring up the pact that he smoked marijuana at a party once. He wasn’t even in competition season, or training that day, ut he did it. He did something that many of us have done, yet because he is Michael Phelps, everything changes. We cannot consider ourselves perfect, because we make mistakes all the time, so maybe we need to allow these athletes to try and fail at the "non-athletic" human qualities, because in the end, they are simply human and, like us, they often make mistakes too. We have these silent requests for athletes. We force them into becoming our role models; we force them into achieving excellence in the athletic world.

Therefore, the mere fact that athletes are constantly accomplishing this excellence, although they are under great pressure, is evidence not of the failure of professional sports in society but of their triumph. We should be proud of Michael Phelps, because he is a positive role model, regardless of whether or not he smoked once upon a time, that just shows us that this man has the talent and ability to maintain athletic success, and the events of a normal humane life, at the same time.

We should be proud because the days of baseball players drinking beer during the game or basketball players using drugs prior to the tip-off are long gone; today we find less of the athletes who carelessly fritter away their talent, and more of the athletes who are more admirable and, more superior role models than before. So maybe we are unsuccessful when it comes to recognizing this, and as a result we require even more from them. This could be hy our vision of a role model, when it comes to athletes, is impractical and unreasonable. Furthermore, in such a materialized world as the present, we have forgotten what we need and replaced it with what we want. We used to have a good vision of the “good life” where all we really needed was the basics, which can be found on Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. Basics and necessities such as: air, food, shelter, sex, safety, love and belonging, self esteem, and personal fulfilment.

Now however, we have become more technologically advanced, and the media has become such a huge influence in our lives which, inevitably, causes us to forget about the basics, and instead fill ourselves with greed, and want. We now feel that in order to have a good life, we must have money, fame, health, and beauty in appearance; all of which we can find in athletes. So now, instead of having role models who are successful, and respect all of Maslow’s basic needs, we have role models who have all the things that we want.

We look at these talented athletes, and we pick out the parts of them that we want to have in our “good life” and we forget the parts of them that we need to have in our “good life”. We look at their outer selves, and forget about their achievements, and their stories. Therefore, athletes can be positive role models for us, depending on what our image of a “good life” is. Now at last we look at what a role model is meant to do for us. A role model is not just a model; they are a model of a specific role which is a vital limitation.

Like previously stated, none of us are perfect, thus, realistically speaking; none of us are models for others. Parents, principles, community leaders; we should all be modest and hope that the younger generation do not follow in our footsteps entirely. For example, in the future, I would like my children to have my voice, passion for writing and sports, and my sense of love and belonging. However, I would not like them to have my health issues, or patience skills and tolerance when it comes to ignorance.

You see, everyone wants to set good examples, we all want to have a good life, filled with our good qualities, not the bad, because then those who follow in our footsteps will be heading in the right direction straight from the beginning. So yes, of course athletes will often fail to model the role that we expect them to model, however we all make mistakes. We cannot expect them to model a role that they are not capable of leading, but nevertheless we can expect them to display good sportsmanship and commitment to fair play.

In the end, we must come to realize that the question is not exactly “Can athletes be positive role models? ” but instead, “What kind of role model do you see athletes as? ” Our idea or a role model is distorted. We have such high expectations of them, causing us to treat them as if they were not human. We also need to take into consideration, our thoughts on a “good life” the difference between what we want to see in our role models, and what we need to see in our role models, because often we are looking at the outer athlete, and not the true inner talent that they might have.

Subsequently, we must remember that athletes are models for their own specific roles, and like any role model they can be successful or they can fail at that role. Therefore we must simply judge them based on the vital constriction that comes with their role, and no more than that. We must expect from them only what they are capable of doing. The study and analysis of this issue has brought me to the realization that we have a huge misconception of what a role model is, and whether or not the relation between role model’s and athlete’s can be made.
