As I stepped out of my house that day, I was more than ready for a luxurious vacation. Nothing could stand between me, and my four week break of rest, relaxation, and renewal. Of all of the places in the world I could go for my rejuvenation pilgrimage, the only place I wanted to go was the French Riviera. Nothing but white beaches, elegant homes, crystal blue water, and receiving the most lavish services in the universe, who wouldn?t want all that for four weeks straight? I stepped into my car, made a mental checklist of all my luggage, and took a deep breath in as I started out on my journey. After hours of sitting in stand still traffic, I finally arrived at the airport. While walking into the font doors, a little man jumped in front of me, like a frog out of water. He was small and springy, with little tufts of red hair sprouting from a ring of shiny skin upon his head. When he smile it was a friendly smile with crooked teeth, but at the same time eerie and imposing. He reminded me of a baby, curious and innocent, and also round and shiny. "Have you heard the word of God today?" he asked me. I gave him an awkward smile, and said no thank you and walked on. As I kept walking, I could hear the religious spokesman chanting phrases about the kingdom of heaven is upon us, and what will God think of each and every one of us, but slowly the noises of the bustling airport drowned out his orations.

Once I had finally reached the ticket counter, passed through the never-ending security line, and found my gate, I still had 45 minutes until my flight took off. I spotted a Starbuck?s right next to my gate, and decided that?s exactly where I needed to spend my time before my trip. I took a spot in line behind a tall gentlemen, chatting away on his cell phone. He was large, with a lean, toned figured, dark hair and features, and was dressed from what I could tell in a fine Italian suit. Even his briefcase, call phone, and millions of other little gadgets seemed to be of the highest of quality. From listening in on his telephone call, secretly behind him waiting for my Chai Tea Latte, I learned that he was also going to the French Riviera, but where as my excursion is for pleasure, I could obviously tell his was for some sort of business. After he received his grande Double-Shot, No Whip, Non-Fat, Extra-Hot Mocha, never stopping to take a breath in his conversation, he power walked right out of the store. He nearly ran over a young boy, asking him if he wanted his shoes shined. The boy looked about 18 years old, dark brown skin, with a clean cut head of hair. He looked scraggly, as if he had not eaten properly in some time, but still had an air of pride in his appearance. When the Business Man nearly steam rolled over him, he just sincerely apologized for being so careless, and asked the man if he had enough time would he like his shoes to be shined. Obviously, the Business Man did not feel a show shine was an adequate way of spending the next 45 minutes before takeoff, and stormed away from the boy with a snort and look of disapproval.

As the man walked away, I noticed how tired and sad the boy?s faced actually looked. I assumed that scenes like the one I had just witnessed happened more frequently than not, but I still flinched at the thought of how the upper class of our society treats the people below them. I contemplated whether I should offer the boy some substantial food or drink, or whether that would just offend him, but before I could come to a decision he had walked off, showing me a side of our society I hate to witness as he did so. After sipping my tea and watching all of the families and people walk by my table, I at last heard my flight number being called to start boarding. As I walked onto the plane, I saw your usual retired couples taking a dream vacation in their new found free time, young couples maybe taking a romantic get a way or even starting their honey moon, and some single men and women who you can never tell if they are going for business or pleasure (including the infamous Starbucks Business Man). None of these people really caught my attention, just merely the same people with different physical appearances, but the girl sitting in the seat next to me did catch my eye. She was strikingly beautiful, with dark, almost black-brown hair that slowed the middle of her back, shiny and healthy. She was dressed fashionably, yet comfortable, in clothes common to what you see most 20 year old women wearing, and she had the biggest, most beautiful brown eyes. She was peering over her glasses and was reading an pamphlet on the wonders if Europe, including a page on France and the French Riviera. The brochure was not the only paper in front of her, in fact, she had about 20 articles, pamphlets, packets, whatever strewn about on her tiny airplane desk.

I finally worked up the courage to ask what was with all the papers, and should told me how she was a student in college, and this was her first trip out of the US, and she was taking it alone. She had the bright-eyed excitement of a kid who had just woken up on Christmas morning, eager to open all of their presents. I thought to myself how brave she must be, venturing out alone, backpacking through Europe, but then again I thought that?s how students were now a days. Brave, eager to learn, and ready just take in all life can offer. Once the plane took off, I decided to leave the Student to her work, and was going to get a head start on my much anticipated murder mystery, when my eyes just could not stay open. About 2 hours later, I realized I had just slept for a good portion of my trip. Already was this turning out to calm me more than I had imagined! I quickly became aware though of how odd I must look, after taking a 2 hour nap and decided to make a quick run to the bathroom. I headed out of the bathrooms, and noticed a woman sitting in the front row I had not noticed before. She must have boarded the plane after I had gotten on.

She the whole first row of seat to herself, and reminded so much a Miss Piggy doll it was all I could to stop from laughing. Her bleached blonde hair was tightly curled in little sausages and stylishly done in a messy bun, she had caked on layers of foundation, bright blue eye shadow to match her bright blue cheetah print jacket, overly-exaggerated cheekbones and eyes, and bright pink to lips to top it all off. She chattering away on what else, but a cell phone, and was visibly frustrated by someone on the other line. I must have not realized it, but I guess I had been standing there watching her, fascinated, for several minutes before she told me, in a very churlish voice, "Look, I only given autographs out to kids for free. If you want one, you?re going to have to pay $5 dollars for it". Well, finally snapping out of whatever stage I was in, I quickly apologized for my rudeness and returned to my seat. I asked my friend the Student if she had any idea as to who the Mystery Miss Piggy was, and she told me it was this woman who actually had some bit of fame in her younger years, and was still desperately trying to hold onto them. I just merely laughed to myself and took out the magazine in front of me. Three cokes, one more bathroom break, and five magazines later, I was at the French Riviera. Nothing could have prepared me for how beautiful and magnificent it was going to be, or how interesting my trip down here was going to be. Just the different parts of our society, all in one place kind of throw you for a loop sometimes. I was read though for four weeks of nothing but fun in the sun.
