1984 is a dystopian novel written by George Orwell in 1949. The book is set in London, England in the year 1984 and is about the life of Winston Smith. Winston works for the Ministry of Truth, where he changes historical records to fit the current party line. As a result of his job, Winston becomes disillusioned with society and starts secretly writing down his thoughts in a journal. He also begins to fall in love with Julia, another worker at the Ministry.

Winston discovers that his lover also has her own diary, so they begin meeting secretly to discuss their feelings about how they are being controlled by Big Brother (the leader of Oceania). Eventually, they decide to rebel against Big Brother by starting an illegal relationship and by continuing to write their diaries. Julia’s brother works at the Ministry as well, so she warns him not to tell anyone about her relationship with Winston or else he will be arrested. Unfortunately, he does not heed her warning and tells someone anyway–which leads to Winston being arrested and sent away to Room 101 (where torture takes place).
