Eli came across the property for his business through property management he worked for the owner managing his property and he had to evict the tenants that were occupying the building. He then decided to invest into the property and open up his restaurant there.
Eli soon put ideas together to formulated on how to conduct a restaurant and what’s the major tools you need to put together a business ,he rented a handbook (like a for dummy book to start a restaurant) from the library and read it from cover to cover.
Eli want to keep the idea of a soul food restaurant because the previous tenants where a soul food restaurant so he figure that it would market to the community better because the concept was already establish. The next step for him was putting together a menu for the restaurant. Eli and his wife went to different soul food restaurant to check out they menus, prices, the way they serve their food to customers, and they overall customer services. When establishing their own recipe for the business, his wife and him would invite friends over to blind taste there food and add their comments. Basically, he used a cup measuring systems to work out the portions to cook the food and his wife record the measurement and put it on paper so they can execute there receipe for the restaurant.
Once the menu was together he then expedite a check list to opening the restaurant. first he got his money together that he been saving up over the years him and his wife. He put together a business plan to get some other resources once that was together he remodel the restaurant from top to bottom he re did the flooring the ceiling the plumbing and the electrical wiring all over again. Business is ready to be open.
In the year 2009 Eli Matthew’s Home Style Cooking was up in running and has been going strong for the past two years in spite of the economy . Eli along with his wife manage the business, they make sure that they compete with competitors prices, they do inventory, make sure they have enough food for the restaurant, they do portion control on how to distribute out the food to customer, provide good customer service and they have a computer based cash register to make there transaction and put in orders to the cook. His business has two to four waitress with a strict limited amount of hours, two short order cook, and three main cook which include himfthe owner), his wife, and a friend name Pete.
To run the business smoothly Eli have the short order cook along with himself prep for the next business day. And one hour before business open Eli arrived to finished prepping. Eli and his cook carried out the function of the restaurant. From observation Eli greet the customer when coming through the door, he take their order and put the orders in through the computer based system, and serve them when the food is ready. Eli does majority of the work; it is his business, so he feel that it his responsibility to keep it running, he also explain that because of the economy setbacks he hired a very small number of staff to help with other responsibilities.
Eli host events to expose the restaurant to getting new customers like game night, fight night, and offer city officials to conduct business meeting. Eli states that he always give his staff words of encouragement and inspiration to have a successful events.
The laws and regulations of the state and federal government has major influences on his business, he states that he more and welcome to comply with the government rules to running his business they help shape his business to become successful and help keep the customer satisfy. However, Eli doesn’t have and code of ethics Policy he feel that its his business and it should be run the way he wanted it to run and if the employees have any problem with it they can quit, he explain that before letung an employee take a job he explain his policy of how he conduct his business and may also let them try the posidon out.
Eli hasn’t put much involvement into the contribudng to the community. Eli feels and want to contribute more it just that he wants to wait until he well establish to start volunteering for the community.
Eli has a lot of growing to do his business has been open for two years and you can tell it still growing, you can appreciate the home feeling you get when you walk in. He gives his customer the opportunity to get to know him and the food he put out by the greeting at the door, Him taking your order and recommending whats the best thing to eat on the menu. The food there is great and i can appreciate the time he spent given me a history of why he wanted to start his business, how he put his plan into motion and execute it, and how he keep it running.
