As a member of the Z Generation, I am concerned about the future that beholds my peers in this country. The American Diabetes Association stated that the number of children in the United States with type 2 diabetes has drastically increased in the past three decades, doubling from 2.8 percent in 1985 to 30.1 percent in 2015, and it is continuously growing. I am writing to urge change in our country’s health policies to reduce the rate of people that suffer and die from this chronic disease. Diabetes remains the seventh leading cause of death by disease in U.S. children. In 2015, the American Centers of Disease Control and Prevention recorded 53,000 death of members in the Z generation. One of those 53,000 deaths included my younger cousin.

Thousands of people are losing their loved ones every year and sadly, the deaths seem to be accumulating annually. Further studies have shown the result of this drastic increase was caused by various genetic and environmental factors. However, doctors say there is a direct correlation between obesity and diabetes. Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past three decades. This problem is mainly caused by the difference in pricing between healthy and unhealthy products, the reality is, that unhealthy food is most advertised and economically friendly making it making hard to make healthy choices. For many low-income families, the additional cost is a genuine barrier to healthy eating, yet this daily price difference is trivial in comparison with the lifetime and societal financial burden of this diet-related chronic illnesses.

As stated by the public health journal, our country's system of policy causes the production of unhealthy foods. In the United States, many decades of policies focus on producing inexpensive high-volume commodities that lead to the complex network of farming, storage, transportation, processing, manufacturing, and marketing capabilities that favorite sales of high processed food for maximum industry profit. Food and agricultural policies have always manipulated prices; for decades the U.S. government has subsided efforts to increase agricultural output, being indifferent to the outcome it has on the quality of American diets. Our current policies are causing this problem. In order to fix we need to lower prices on healthy foods, now will this may seem simple it would help many people. Increase in the amount of fruit, vegetables, and whole grains that people eat, but also seems to reduce the consumption of less nutritional desired foods.

Changing policies surrounding the production of goods, and making healthy items accessible effort to create infrastructure and commercial framework that facilities the production, transportation, and manufacturing of healthy foods. This would increase the ability and decrease the prices of more healthy foods. Taxation of less healthy foods and subsidies for healthier foods would also be an evidence-based intervention to balance price differences. The lower cost would change the way we implement policy on those healthy foods we can make America healthy again one product shelf at a time, decreasing the rising of diabetes type 2. Thank you for your consideration. I know that you are an extremely busy man, and I want to use the remainder of my paper to urge you to take in consideration my proposal to take those steps to reinforce healthy eating, in order to lessen the rate of those battling with diabetes type 2 in the Z generation.
