What is an Exploratory Essay?

We can define an exploratory essay as writing that seeks to determine the writer's thoughts, feelings, and reactions about a particular subject.

The essays help readers understand how we see things by describing our experiences, observation, or evidence, which allows us to reach conclusions. In other words, they help students or teachers discover their views and opinions on a particular issue or topic.

Exploratory essays are common in academic writing. These essays are not supposed to be the final products or works in a specific field. Instead, they are usually intended to explore a particular topic from different angles for the writer to gain more clarity regarding their thoughts and reflections.

How to write an Exploratory Essay?

Exploratory essays are usually assigned in high school, college, or university classes. These teachers will provide exploratory essay examples of topics from which students can choose the most interesting one.

  1. Pick the topic. Have you got some essay ideas? Choose one and think of what we can discuss about it.

  2. List your thoughts regarding this issue and write down some directions you want to follow in your exploratory paper. It is essential to write a few notes at this stage to help you organize your ideas.

  3. Start working on your essay. Take notes and make sure that you have all the necessary information about this issue at hand. Write down a few ideas that will help you stay focused on your paper's topic and capture enough details on the complexity of the argument.

  4. Proofread your work. All schools, colleges, or universities have policies regarding the requirements to submit well-written papers free of all writing mistakes.

Thesis statement

Your thesis must be arguable; it must state a claim or refute a claim about your issue. A thesis must have some chance of being true in order to be debatable. It should not, however, be widely recognized as true; instead, it should be a statement that people can disagree with. It's important to remember that a thesis includes both an observation and an opinion:

observation + opinion (the "why") = thesis

Seeing if your thesis creates a powerful antithesis is an excellent approach to determine how strong it is.

Common thesis pitfalls:

  • A thesis in the form of a fragment.
  • A thesis that is overly broad.
  • A thesis that is phrased as a question. (The thesis is usually derived from the solution to the question.)
  • Extraneous information is included in a thesis.
  • A thesis that begins with the words "I believe" or "In my opinion."
  • A thesis that deals with a tired or cliched topic.
  • A thesis that includes phrases that lead to erroneous generalizations (all, none, always, only, everyone, etc.)

Exploratory Essay Outline

The outline sharing is something that every college or university provides. A typical exploratory essay outline example usually includes a thesis statement and the main points on how to write an experimental essay introduction and conclusion.

General guidelines that students should follow to create an outline include the following:

The thesis statement must begin with a topic, followed by supporting evidence. Use transition words and phrases to link paragraphs together. Write it in your language without using too many quotations or direct sayings from your research provider. Double-space and use the correct font, margins, and page format. Be professional.

Exploratory essay structure

When writing this essay, you need to follow a specific structure. The explanatory essay format is the one most teachers prefer to receive from their students because it is simple and easy to understand.

The structure of this essay usually includes an introduction, followed by three to five main paragraphs and a conclusion. Usually, the first paragraph is dedicated to an exploratory essay thesis statement. The following sections need to follow a logical chronological pattern, and each must have a topic sentence and supportive details.

As for the conclusion, you should summarize what you have discussed in the body of your essay.

It is good to include citation  - this is optional but always a good idea to show that you found your information from a reliable source.

To make your points outstanding, you can use all kinds of writing techniques, including narrative or expository, depending on your paper's topic.

1. Introduction

The introduction is the first part of your paper. It states what you plan to write about, including an idea discussed and explained in the following paragraphs. The thesis statement is a short sentence or two that captures your topic while indicating relevance to the reader and potential interest.

Your introduction must have a hook that will capture readers' attention and draw them in. These hooks include an exciting quotation, a startling fact or statistic, current reference to pop culture, etc.

A well-written hook will encourage your readers to stay focused on the rest of your paper as they would be interested in reading what you have put together for them.

Write five introductory paragraphs that the body of your paper will follow.

2. Thesis Statement

A thesis statement is a short sentence that captures your topic. It identifies it and indicates its relevance to the reader as well as potential interest. Your thesis statement should be clear, concise, and specific.

While exploring the topic of your paper, you will come across an idea. It is essential to mention that it does not have to be a complete sentence but rather thought in no more than two or three words.

Your thesis statement should include one of the following words: need, problem, solution, issue, relevant argument, claim, and recommendation.

3. Body Paragraphs

There are four kinds of paragraphs that you can use in your exploratory essay: the descriptive, process or sequence, cause and effect, and comparison or contrast. When writing a specific paragraph, the format that you should follow consists of an introductory sentence followed by a statement that includes a topic sentence and explanatory and supporting evidence.

For example, when writing about the cause and effect format, you must include the situation or problem (cause), followed by its effects on health (result). Make sure not to use too much detail as this will complicate your paper and bore your readers.

4. Conclusion

Write a conclusion that restates the main points and allows the readers to take something from it at the end of your paper. For example, you can use a quotation from another author who agrees with you or suggest further research regarding an exploratory essay topic.

The conclusion will need to be less than a page in length and include the same standards as the body paragraphs.
