To be a person of good character is to be someone who can be relied upon to do right by others. Though I try to make the right choices every day, I’m not always sure what the right choice is. A friend confided in me that she was struggling with family issues, something I didn’t know how to help with. But she needed a friend to rely upon, and I continue to fill that role as best as I can. I try to comfort to her and offer them a stable place she can come to when her home becomes stressful. Our relationship has taught me how to be more compassionate, and aware of my decisions, and to simply be there for someone when they need it. However, there are times when accommodating her can be frustrating and I can’t understand her, but I try to be sympathetic.
The scholarship is a drive to learn for learning’s sake. Humans have an innate curiosity about the world, and my curiosity toward the people around me led me to literature. My desire to read about people then manifested itself as a desire to write about them. I began writing stories in middle school, and as I learned about how to write characters, I learned how to build worlds around them. This in turn led me to cultural anthropology, Celtic mythology, the philosophy of Kant, and a wide variety of subjects that have become interests of mine in their own right. While my curiosity has made me knowledgeable in literature, I struggle to apply that drive to other areas of study, particularly math and science.
Service is to help others with no expectation of a favor in return. Teen Arts Council allows me to get involved in activities of the Jepson Center. Our organizer asked for last minute volunteers to help with Family Day, and I signed up. The volunteers and I spent the meeting making a poster, and I took home extra fortune-tellers to make for our booth. The next day we helped little kids make fortune-tellers, draw on the poster, and inform visitors about the featured exhibit. I don’t volunteer as often as I should, but seeing how rewarding it was to give to my community, I can’t wait for the opportunity to volunteer again.

Leadership is using one’s personal strengths to best assist and guide others. But as much as leadership is an active role, a leader must also recognize when someone is better qualified to handle a situation. Earlier in British Literature, we were assigned a Socratic Seminar and paired into groups of coach and speaker. I was excited to speak, but where I struggled to articulate myself, my partner was well-spoken. I took the role of coach, giving feedback and expanding upon her points, helping earn us a 100. Performing leadership often asks me to face my anxieties, which can cause me to overthink. However, I try my best to push past it, and use my perspective to guide others.
