Many differences exist between academic writing and informal writing. One major difference is tone. Informal writing often features humor or other lighthearted tones, whereas academic writing is objective and based on research or the presentation of an argument (Thompson, 2001). Other emotions, such as anger or excitement, are not appropriate for academic writing. People frequently use emotions when interacting with their friends or family. In the academic world, it is important to put emotions to the side and remain objective when writing. Another difference exists in the use of certain words.
In informal writing, it is common for people to use words like I, really, and very. In academic writing, it is usually recommended for the writer to avoid using such words, and to avoid sharing an opinion unless it is backed up by some form of research or evidence. Some exceptions do exist. For example, professors sometimes encourage students to share their own opinions on a topic. Citations and sources are another major difference between academic and informal writing. I have rarely seen someone provide a source or citation whenever they were simply sharing information with a friend. Academic writing heavily stresses the concept of using sources to back up arguments and information.
My experience with academic writing began when I was in high school. We did a few basic writing projects, and the teacher showed us the correct way of researching and citing information. A major takeaway from those experiences was that it is important to be able to determine which sources are scholarly and reliable, and which other ones are things like personal blogs. In doing the papers, I received a large amount of feedback. Although I was initially frustrated at the feedback, I eventually realized that it was for my own good. I became a better writer as a result of my past experiences with academic writing. It can be challenging to master, but it is rewarding once it is learned.

My main strength as a writer is my ability to conduct research. I have spent a long time reading studies that were published in academic journals. The ability to understand and
synthesize scholarly research is an essential part of academic writing (Topping et al., 2000). When I first started learning how to conduct proper research, I found it challenging to read different studies and synthesize the information. The process became easier over time as I practiced it more. It now represents one of my main strengths in academic writing.
One of my weaknesses as an academic writer is with grammar and punctuation. I find that some of my papers receive high marks for the content, but receive deductions based on grammatical mistakes. I hope that with time, I will be able to improve that area of my own writing with practice. I think that spending a long amount of time reading can also be a good way of improving at writing.
