It is always a problem that “most people as they start college have wildly strange ideas about what they are doing when they write an essay, or worse—they have no clear idea at all” (Irvin, 2010, p.4). In order to make one’s academic writing more plausible, an individual should have an idea before writing and one must become information literate. And to achieve that, one needs to know how to use information technology efficiently and effectively (Australian National University, 2014). Moreover, an individual should also use books, magazines, journals, and other non-internet sources. Academic writing is not just writing about what an individual knows because it needs a lot of research before finishing it. Academic writing develops one’s research skills in finding appropriate sources, and consolidating such sources.

It is one’s responsibility to find and use the trustworthy sources. Nowadays, an individual always searches sources in the internet. But, “in accessing the internet, consider that certain garbage materials are also available” (Agalabia, Aranda, and Sembrano, 2005, p.164-165). It can be outdated and unreliable information that any person can make without any sort of review. In the opinion of Fleming (2014), internet information that does not give the name of the author should not be considered as credible source. One issue of authorship on the Internet is that anyone with the abilities and equipment can publish a site.

In spite of the fact that a resource may have great information, it may be published by someone without qualifications, experience and education. However, if the author is named, one must evaluate it. According to Frantz (2014), one ought to analyze the credential of the author by look at the data about the author. Another credible source is the non-internet sources like journals, as stated by Stedman (2014), journal articles are considered as reliable source when it have been associate looked into since it was study by experts in the field. In addition, non-internet sources are clearly published and it demonstrates who the author is. One must be careful for indecent materials that may easily waste one’s time. It is fine to use the Internet as sources, but we cannot always assume information off the Internet is true though, so one must make sure that it has an author and it was updated.

And using non-internet sources is one of the best ways to make one’s work more considerable. But then, it was not the end of having a research. One should consolidate such sources. By taking the imaginative work of an individual, without giving proper credit is considered as plagiarism (Agalabia, Aranda, and Sembrano, 2005, p.192). To avoid that, one should know the use of quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing. These are the “three ways of incorporating other writers’ work into your own writing differ according to the closeness of your writing to the source writing” (Driscoll and Brizee, 2014, H 2). Using these three ways is not easy because some students do not know what the differences of the three are, or sometimes students do not know how to use it.

But if an individual used it properly, one’s work will be great. In addition, according to Browns (2014), one must photocopy the title page of the book. It also stated that one must cite the information such as author, title, publisher, access date, and site. Some students just photocopy the page where the information located that is needed for the assignments or researches. But these students do not know that, that kind of doing was wrong and it can result to plagiarism. To consolidate the sources, one must use quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing, photocopying, and citation. By that, it can enhance the sources founded. Moreover, by doing all of these, an individual can protect oneself against charges of plagiarism and one will be a responsible researcher who gives credits to other researchers for the ideas and information.

Academic writing can be challenging and not easy, but if one acquires the research skill, an individual will be able to find the best sources for the credibility of one’s work. This skill can be applied in everything like in doing a research paper, thesis, and many more. Furthermore, this skill will become a guide to an individual for the great success of one’s career. Academic writing is used in all fields, so all students should have enough knowledge and become better on it.
