Academic writing is not just writing about what an individual knows because it needs a lot of research before finishing it. Academic writing develops one’s research skills in finding appropriate sources, and consolidating such sources.
It is one’s responsibility to find and use the trustworthy sources. Nowadays, an individual always searches sources in the internet. It can be outdated and unreliable information that any person can make without any sort of review. In the opinion of Fleming (2014), internet information that does not give the name of the author should not be considered as credible source. In spite of the fact that a resource may have great information, it may be published by someone without qualifications, experience and education. To avoid that, one should know the use of quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing. Using these three ways is not easy because some students do not know what the differences of the three are, or sometimes students do not know how to use it.
But if an individual used it properly, one’s work will be great. In addition, according to Browns (2014), one must photocopy the title page of the book. It also stated that one must cite the information such as author, title, publisher, access date, and site. Some students just photocopy the page where the information located that is needed for the assignments or researches. But these students do not know that, that kind of doing was wrong and it can result to plagiarism. To consolidate the sources, one must use quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing, photocopying, and citation. By that, it can enhance the sources founded. Moreover, by doing all of these, an individual can protect oneself against charges of plagiarism and one will be a responsible researcher who gives credits to other researchers for the ideas and information.
Academic writing can be challenging and not easy, but if one acquires the research skill, an individual will be able to find the best sources for the credibility of one’s work. This skill can be applied in everything like in doing a research paper, thesis, and many more. Furthermore, this skill will become a guide to an individual for the great success of one’s career. Academic writing is used in all fields, so all students should have enough knowledge and become better on it.
