Nursing, a career in which you go to school to learn a lot of anatomy, physiology, and pathology regarding various systems in the body to use this knowledge in order to help people. But there is a debate to determine if there is more to nursing than just science. Nursing relates to the care, compassion, empathy, and the nurse-patient relationship that develops during the care of the patient.
The American Nurses Association defined professional nursing as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” (Palos, 2014). The science of nursing includes the continuation of knowledge and the technical skills needed to adequately treat the patient. Nursing includes the empathy and compassion needed to help the patient and families.
When a patient is sick and admitted to the hospital, the patient and families are scared, angry, and usually lack the knowledge to understand what is going on. Having empathy, compassion, listening, holding their hand as they cry helps ease the patient’s anxiety, gives the family hope and trust that Nurses will do everything they can do to help the patient. When the compassion piece is missing, it can lead to more anxiety and frustration, which is not good for a healing patient and in fact can slow recovery and increase the length of stay. Active listening, knowing your patient, being trustworthy, showing compassion and empathy are all key elements nurses should practice with every patient.
Nurses have multiple responsibilities when it comes to the practice. Maintaining up-to-date knowledge, but even more so show compassion and empathy for patients. This helps the patient feel cared for as a whole. By showing compassion the patient builds trust, decreases anxiety, and is able to heal faster. Nursing is very complex and does not have a definite definition but that it is something that is valued among patients. It should be focused on the education of nurses from the beginning of their training and continually monitored and to find ways to improve these skills.
