The National Honor Society is a society for leaders and has been established since 1921. I too, am a leader in society and feel that my leadership accomplishments and goals would reflect off National Honor Society. I would love to be a part of the National Honor Society because it will give me more opportunities to be a leader, to participate in community service, and to help and influence the people around me.

Out of the qualities required by the National Honor Society, my leadership skills have developed the most. Ever since I was a year old, I have been going to a Hindu School called Chinmaya Mission. Chinmaya Mission uses the medium of stories, drama, and cultural art to teach and discuss the underlying meaning of Indiaas rich cultural heritage and moral values. For the past three summers, I have had the honor of being chosen to be a youth volunteer at the summer camp.

Being a youth volunteer was a fun and rewarding experience that involved a wide variety of tasks and responsibilities. The first and foremost rule was that we were expected to be role models for the campers, exemplifying respect, duty and self-control. Our primary job was to look out for the children and help the schedule flow as smoothly as possible while fostering a fun and caring environment. One thing that I learned from being a volunteer was responsibility and doing the right thing. Every volunteer wants the kids to like them, but that does not mean that they can let the kids do anything they want. It also does not mean that they can boss the kids around.

Another leadership position that I currently hold is assistant dance teacher. Since 7th grade, I have been learning one of the eight forms of Indian classical dance: Kuchipudi. Kuchipudias main purpose is to employ grace, pure dance and expression to interpret the scriptures and to show adherence to God. Since 2011, I have assisted in teaching the fundamentals of Kuchipudi to the new students. There have also been a few times when lave held the class on my own as my teacher was out of town. Being an assistant dance teacher has taught me how to communicate and relate to children, patience and tolerance.

Other than leadership, I also strive for the being the best I can be, especially in academics. I am taking mostly honors and AP classes and believe these challenging classes will help prepare me for my future. I believe that challenging myself to get a better grade than I did on previous tests will help me grow as a student.

One quality that I have always been commended on is empathy. Ever since I was a little child, lave always wanted to help others in need. One of the ways that my family and I achieve this is by donating money to different charities, like St. Judes, Children&Ts Miracle Network and the Red Cross. Another way that I show empathy is by participating in making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the homeless. Doing these kinds of activities makes me feel glad that somehow, I am making someone elseås day a little bit brighter.

Even with these experiences, I still believe I have plenty of room to grow. I believe that joining the National Honor Society would help me further my character, leadership, and service, and that I have much to offer to the South River community.
