A Reflection on a Dreadful Camping Experience

It was last summer when my dad suggested we go for a camping trip to an old wood cabin that was about 4 hours drive from home. From my parents' description of the place, you would think it was a paradise where no one would wish to leave once you are there but this was not the case. We started experiencing hurdles just when we began joining off-road, where the infrastructure was terrible; poor roads to a point that we had to change flirt tires severally before we arrived the camping destination.

On reaching the camping site, we found only four families, among them; two were locals from the neighborhood who looked quite comfortable with the place. The tents were too small, the pitches were muddy and stopped, there were no playgrounds near our tents and the place was very scary with sound of nearby animals such as bears, wild dogs, etc.

From that moment, with the bad state of sanitations accompanied by very unpleasant odor from the surrounding, I knew either we had been played by the management or our dad who seemed very comfortable. Given a chance to go back home, I would have not hesitated even for a second for I knew we were to experience an awful camping experience ever.

There were no play areas within the pitches, so we had to accompany our young siblings to nearby playing grounds. On the way to the sporting fields, we met several residents who looked at us as if we had made the worst choice of camping wood of our life. On arriving at the playgrounds, we found that some other kids had already occupied some parts, and we were forced to take the part with too many rocks and mad.

The swimming pools were filthy, in that the kids from the neighborhood were the only one who was swimming in it. It was not long before the rain begun unexpectedly, my younger brother, and I was only wearing a track suit that could not prevent us from feeling the cold. There was no shade to shade from the rain and the distance from the playing grounds to the pitches were about 20 minutes walk. We walked in the rain accompanied by other kids all the way to the campsite. We found our parents shading in the tents while watching the road for us to appear. Due to the slippery, rough road, they could not come for us with the car.

Thinking that we were now in a better place to shade, another problem arose. Due to the sloppy nature of pitches, the tents could not prevent the water from penetrating inside the tent from the ground. We had to go look for a shovel and dig around the three tents we had set. As that was not enough, sleeping was a problem because of the sloppy nature of the pitch and the muddy pitch mad the foundation of the tent loose due to the soft ground thus it was difficult to get the pegs stay in.

The pitches we had booked were in an open place such the wind could blow directly past our tents. It was freezing that even after covering myself with every cloth in the tent I could still shiver. When the rain stopped, we realized that no one had remembered to secure some firewood for the bonfire and the pitch was muddy that it felt so uncomfortable to walk around. For this other reason, it further worsened my camping experience, and the only thing that kept ringing in my mind is to go back home.

Another reason that made me lists that camping experience as one of the worst experience I have and will ever have to undergo was the scary sound during the night. Bearing in mind that we had no defense mechanism other than a shovel and hockey sticks, I could hear the sound of a bear and wild dogs from a near distance. It scared the hell out of me and at this point I could not even close my eyes for the whole thinking they could come when I am asleep and feast on us.
