Sam is celebrating the Chinese New Year by going shopping with his mother as Sams's's four lessees burn a hole in his pocket. He looks for things to buy with the lessees but become unappreciative when he realizes he doesn’t have enough money. He then sees how grateful the homeless man is to receive far less than what Sam had. That is when Sam reached a turning point and learned that everything should be appreciated and happiness should be shared and he gave his four dollars to the homeless man.

I’m the book things in nature such as the sun and clouds are personified making sense of people communicating with them. One day the tribe complained about clouds and rain and wished only the sun would shine. The Cloud disappeared as Grandfather Sun baked the camp of the Cree. All the inhabitants almost died from the drought but a young boy went into the woods to seek help from Wísahkecàhk. He told the great spirit that the Cree learned their lesson and promised to value the clouds as much as the sun, Wísahkecàhk gave the young boy the power to restore the clouds and rain to his people since they learned from their mistakes. Now the people of Cree will always value all weather as it maintains balance.

While Sugar knew nothing about Chinese people she still had an optimistic curiosity about who they were, especially since she was so lonely. When the “Chinamen” arrived Sugar was the first person itching to branch out. The other River Road people were hesitant and feared of the new men being different and also coming to take away their lively hood. Sugar meets Bo “Beau” one of the new Chinese men. He is sweet and patient and accepting of Sugar and everyone else in River Ridge. The first day of work the Chinese men started out strong, outshining the others until Sugar belted out her song. When everybody started singing the Chinese men sensed their concern and matched the pace of the others so they could then all work in unison. The main character,Ben, is an inspiration to anybody aspiring to do what they love.

He had a talent that he enjoyed and knew he would be great at it so he practiced all the time...on his air trumpet. Other kids made fun of him for it, almost encouraging him to quit. The man that inspired Ben to pick up the trumpet saw Ben's passion and wanted to make his dreams a reality and gave him a real trumpet to refine his talent. I thought this book was so cute and sweet, especially after seeing the dedication in the back to the real life 'Tia Isa' standing next to her ocean water green car. This book had a hopeful story about perseverance for things that you want to achieve. It also gives reference to the dilemmas of Mexican families being separated by the border and the concept of 'helping money' . I enjoy books that expose real life situations for students that may have no experience while also giving hope to students that see themselves in the shoes of the characters they read about.

There's a Monster in the Alphabet is not your typical ABC's book. The folklore follows Cadmus a phoencian who is said to have created the city of Thebes and created Greece's first alphabet . Cadmus' tale explains the creation of thebe's while incorporating mystical elements such as monsters. Instead of the familiar 'H is for horse' the letters were defined by the items they looked like and were depicted as in writing 'H is represented by a picture of a fence. The illustrations help visualize these things as the letters are strategically hidden in the drawings . For example the letter K is depicted as a hand in the phoencian script so the illustrator placed the letter K on Cadmus' hand . Very interesting book to learn about origin languages .

I enjoy how this book explored sexual identity and sexuality through the perspective of animals we typically don't associate with any gender norms. The story follows two worms that fall in love and decide to get married. On wedding day comes the dilemma, who is the bride and who is the groom? Instead of each worm picking a single role they both assumed the role of wife and groom. This simple act showed that gender norms are nothing but societal rules that really don't control how a person may feel or identify. ( ) The story started out kind of slow for me. Throughout the whole novel I wondered what the connection between Skellig and Michael’s house was, if there was one. When skellig mentioned his liking to brown ale and the Chinese food and him learning it from Ernie , I thought maybe he was Ernie’s guardian angel . Later in the story Skellig is found laying on the stairs , Ernie also eventually could not manage the stairs.

However, instead of staying on ground level the children walked him to the top of the stairs. Later that night Skellig disappeared, the same night Michael’s infant sister was having her procedure . When Michael talked to his mother after the procedure she said that she saw a man that fit Skelligs discription dancing with the Infant as she had ghost-like wings coming out her back before she went into surgery. The infant almost died but it was as if she caught a second wind and survived. All of these events led me to believe that Skellig was a guardian angel , possibly Ernie’s angel or maybe even a representation of Ernie’s soul that did not get the closure it needed to “go home”. The soul got another chance to save a life , Joy’s life, and was able to go to where I assume is heaven . As a child, when your parents don't let you have your way it may feel like they are trying to be mean.

John Steptoe takes the childs feelings about their father to a new level when he illustrates him as if he was a werewolf, changing between the sweet father and a hairy monster with fangs as soon as the children don't get their way. The father is not the only one being illustrated as a monster, as the children make doing things that the father does not like they are shown with whiskers and little fangs. In the end the father admits to being a monster sometimes but only when his children are little monsters. One April Morning is set April 1995 in Oklahoma city. On April 19th , Oklahoma City faced a terrorist attack that killed and injured hundred of people including children. The main characters of the story are some elementary schoolers that are reflecting on the bombing.

They feel anger, mourning, sadness and fear. The children consoled each other and eventually moved on from the situation. While this book is explicitly themed after WWII and the trials that civilians faced, the story goes deeper and touches on themes that unfortunately hit home with many people, such as poverty, neglect, and disability. As if being a young child during WWII was not tumultuous enough, Ada was afflicted with club foot and was treated like a hideous monster that must be kept indoor ,because her mother was ashamed of her disability. Ada’s lack of knowledge of the outside creates a vicious cycle of uncertainty as she wishes to get away from her mother but also fears that she would not be loved because of her condition. Her and her brother went out on a limb and escaped to the trains in hopes of being taken in by somebody who will care for them.

Things seemed bleak when they were not chosen by anyone and had to get placed with somebody who initially had no desire to take in children,Susan. Ada eventually came around to Susa and learned that it is possible to love and be loved against the odds of their pasts. I felt the story was great at reinforcing that even though you may have a disability you are still worthy and deserving of love . The war saved Ada’s life because if she wouldn't have seen the opportunity to leave her mother’s home she could have either died or just lived a life under the guise that everything is miserable and she would never be accepted.

The book is a glimpse into the life of South Pacific islanders. Kessy is our main character and is excited to wash laundry with his family as it is tradition to tell stories.His mother sends him into town for him to buy “the biggest soap”. When on his way home he helps friends and family and then finally weaves a story so extravagant, it is fantastical. This story is very entertaining and accompanied by gorgeous illustrations and is enjoyable to read.

I was so excited to read this book. I used to be a vegan so I find myself resonating with information in regards to animal welfare and plant based nutrition. The book tackles vegetarianism in so many ways such as it’s history(survival, religion), why one should try vegetarianism (welfare, costs, greenhouse gases), and actually becoming a vegetarian. The book is extremely informative but not preachy . I like that it shows both side of the argument around going vegetarian or reducing consumption of animal products .
