My parents have always stressed too me to be thankful for what I have. They often tell me to be hardworking and not take the things I have for granted. I have always agreed but never completely understood. I have volunteered before to help less fortunate but have always done simple things like gathering food or cloths for them during the Holidays. Going on a community connections field trip has been an eye opening experience because I didn't just donate can foods to the homeless but I really got to see who they are, their back round, how they live, what they eat and the day by day struggle they have to face to get back on their feet. My favorite part about it was learning about the kids.
I have always loved being around kids, playing with them and making them laugh, so it was hard for me to learn that the kids at the shelter are not doing very well academically. A lot of the kids at the shelter have been there for a long period of time and many of them are developmentally delayed. Most of these young kids and teenagers have gone through things that a typical child or young adult would not go through. Many of the kids are worried about what they can eat and where they will stay the night; not about homework or assignments. When volunteering at the center I hung up posters that the kindergarten and first grade kids made, about where they live their dreams and favorite colors. I learned that many of the kids had trouble even saying these things let alone writing them.
To me and many others it's not a question whether I will be attending school. Many homeless children face unique barriers to education. These barriers include being unable to meet enrollment requirements, such as providing proof of an address or that they have a guardian. Not having a home, a bus can't be provided to you, so they don't have transportation.

These kids don't have school supplies and many of them don't have clean or any cloths. Because of these things many of the students don't even go to school and this causes them to fall behind, and not get an education. One other difficult thing for homeless kids is that with them not going to school, they miss out on many school opportunities like sports, clubs and more important scholarships or being able to attend college.
By the time homeless children reach school age, their homelessness affects their social, physical, and academic lives. In each of the major areas surveyed-physical health, development, and academic performance— studies reveal that homeless children suffer specific physical, psychological, and emotional damage due to there situations and things they have experienced, seen and the different stages of their homelessness.
Even though the kids are behind and have struggled Community Connections housing team up with many organizations to help these wonderful kids get back on there feet and meet their full potential. The community connections child development center for low-income children provides reading and vocabulary help. They also have after school programs where the children are supervised while getting homework assistance and computer instructions can also be available. This is a great opportunity for the kids to get homework help with a subject they are struggling with form a trusted adult. One of my favorites is that they have summer camp for the kids. Almost 1000 children between Kindergarten and age 15 participate in the Community Connections Summer Camp program. They can play sports games, fitness, fun field trips and they also have helpful reading and math programs that are available to them.
If I didn't go to the community connections homeless center field trip I wouldn't have gotten the opportunity to get such an amazing experience. It has made me realize to be thankful for things that I thought were normal and take for granted like my education. One of the biggest things I have learned about this is to always help others and give back. With people donating and giving things like books and dictionaries it can give the children a chance to learn or practice their vocabulary. I am very thankful for the great people who volunteer to help and donate things like bookshelf's, furniture cloths and toys, because I know if I were in one of these shelters I would appreciate the little thing.
