The Importance of Good Moral Values in Schools

You see an elderly person stumble and fall on the side walk from a distance. You watch as a group of teenagers on their cellphones ignore them and continue walking. You rush to assist them because that's what a person with any moral value would do. Being that I was raised with morals and immersed in them during my schooling, I carry a different view point. I think morals should be taught in school as well as by a child's parents.

Although there are those who are uncomfortable with the idea of their child receiving a social study of this sort, the fact of the matter is, children should be taught in both home and school about conduct and morality. Without good morals, a child is no better than a teenager who cares for nothing but themselves and what will benefit them in the long run. Part of that is when children can put others before themselves.

Some people think it's better to leave the teaching of morality to the parents. “I feel the public schools are overstepping their bounds when they start giving moral education to children without parental consent. This type of teaching from secular educators would cause a great deal of conflict within children who are raised in Christian homes" (Curtis, para. 2). The reason I bring up religion is because of the blinders that are created by religion in general.

Teaching a child to even dislike someone because their parents are gay or Atheist doesn't make them any better than anyone else. Ethnicity, a person or group of people's cultural ideals come next. The place a person is born can sometimes complicate a person's morals. Let's take Morocco for instance, country children will release themselves on a stranger's doorstep. Not only is that crude, but it's extremely rude. But this is another country and to the country-folk of Morocco, it's seen as acceptable because they don't know any better.

At a very young age, my parents went to work teaching me right from wrong. Even before I entered grammar school, I was a quiet and well-behaved child. My behavior, compared to those of some of my classmates, made me more of a teacher's pet. My grades were good and I was rather social. My manners and kindness were being constantly rewarded in and out of school. One of the things that truly separated me from the majority of my generation was my capacity to care. My heart was tested above all else when my Father became ill in 2008 and, as broken up as I was about it in 2009, I dropped everything to take care of him. If this had happened to one of my immoral, fair-weather friends I had at the time, I'm absolutely sure they wouldn't have done the same for their parent.

The need for children to become level-headed and moral is desperately needed. These things alone can influence positive habits and give a child a much brighter future. The teachings of morality can easily be integrated into any subject. Morals do not take away from a child's ability to learn in the classroom, it enhances it. Morals help with the emotional growth of a child and can help make the most irate children more manageable.

All in all, if morals were taught as they should be the world would be a better place. People would abide by the law more often than not. The crime rate in areas of high crime would go down. People would be more respectful to their parents and other people of authority. The elderly person would have been picked up or an ambulance would have been called for them by the teenager who ignored them. With morals more would be right in the world.
