One of the many challenges the main character had to overcome in the novel was the responsibility to parent his close friend Lennie. The author describes this character to have a childish mental state showing his excitement to “tend the rabbits”. George takes advantage of Lennie’s oblivious state of mind to paint a picture of a farm with their own livestock. He does this with loving intentions in order to calm Lennie in times of distress to achieve their dream. Through this, the reader comprehends the heartfelt motions put forth by George realizing his fear of not being able to properly care for Lennie. The author displays a sense of memory and self-reflection through the scene of Lennie’s death.
George once again is in a desperate situation with the means to keep Lennie as pure and innocent as possible. Leading him to calm Lennie, reassuring him of the infamous glory of that their farm and tending the rabbits would bring them. George does this by explaining that “Ain’t gonna be no more trouble. Nobody gonna hurt nobody nor steal from ‘em…’ Let’s do it now. Let’s get that place now’...George raised the gun and steadied it”. The main character pursued the actions he did after acknowledging the fact that Lennie never meant harm and like a child, he lacks general knowledge and common sense. Leaving him with no choice but to capture the purity within Lennie and end any future problems to come.
