Restaurant Review: The Mockingbird Cafe

Right now I’m sitting at The Mockingbird, A little cafe that serves beer, and of course coffee, along with various food and snacks, such as cookies, located in old town Bay. St Louis. At first glance the outside appears to be a very old run down wooden shack, with worn down white paint across the boards and an old blue porch with rocking chairs on it. Inside too is a little shabby, with hardwood floors, off white rustic walls, and art from local artists hung around the walls. Everything about this place is very rustic and homey, with a very nice atmosphere, (which is mainly the reason I come here) dimmed lights, a wonderful live acoustic band playing, the smell of freshly brewed coffee in the air, the sound of the music muffling the children playing and the adults drinking their beers, laughing, conversing, having just a grand old time.

You can even smell the delicious food being cooked in the kitchen, which is mostly hamburgers, which happen to be famous around here, and for good reason. It’s very easy for someone, especially someone like me, to just spend their entire day here and get lost in this kind of atmosphere. The people that work here are mainly the type you’d expect, very hip, young, and beautiful, albeit they are for the most part friendly and seem to be pretty down to earth

Step 2

As I write this I’m sitting in the corner with my laptop, watching/listening to the live band playing. The small two person band includes: a man playing an old beat up guitar, dressed very rugged, with a dirty old blue truckers hat, a grey shirt that’s two sizes too big on his small skeleton like frame and a face that is very nagged with a full beard. The second singer is a female, a woman of about her late 20s wearing a beautiful form fitting dress with a flower pattern on it and small old black shoes that go very well with it. Her voice is very booming and warm with a particularly common, strong southern accent, which adds a very blues grassy feel to the music.

The man playing guitar seems so lost in his music, his eyes closing periodically as if he feels a certain nirvana about the sound that his guitar is making, that and the lovely tone that his partners voice is making. The song sounds very sad and really seems to reflect the mood of the place , or at least maybe set it. Both are sitting down side to side, playing their music, looking lovingly into each other’s eyes, you can really tell that they are a couple that have been together for a while, it’s such a sight to see.

Sitting here as I am, drinking my very strong and cold frozen mocha cappuccino, in this very hard, old, rickety chair, I feel very weaiy and sad from the music; it’s almost as if the wonderful atmosphere of The Mockingbird is putting me in a trance. All die songs that the couple is playing is very touching, with both of their warm booming southern voices which blends into amazing tones with the man’s acoustic guitar. As I look at the faces of everyone else in the cafe, they too seem to be paying attention to nothing, but the couple which is playing in front of us; everyone seems to be touched in some way by the music.

I later talked to the couple to find out more about them, because they seem so approachable and friendly, which just so happens, they were. The couple that is playing are very friendly outgoing people, who really don’t do anything, but play the music they love, for the people they love, which they exclaimed to be the people of Bay St. Louis. Overall, I really like the music that they are playing, it has a certain effect on everyone, they took the music from a sad slow melody, to a face paced song that really lightened the mood of the cafe.
