Everyone has always heard that it is healthy to get at least eight hours sleep every night. How can someone if they are piled with homework and play a sport and maybe are also in a club, so they are not getting home until really late at night with barely leaving enough time to get ready for bed before passing out because the exhaustion from all the extracurricular activities partaking in life.
How is someone even supposed to function if they also have a job because they were not born into a wealthy family and has to work for what they want? Expecting kids to get up so early for school after how long of a day they had the night before with all the fun or stress they were involved in is just ridiculous. The amount of sleep teens need is never going to add up to the correct amount if they are expected to sleep so many hours then get up at such an early hour
Sleep researchers have found that most adolescents and adults need more than the average amount of sleep than we normally get. We can "get used to" less, and we might think we're adjusted to less, but our brains and bodies won't be doing as well with less sleep. Those of us who routinely get six hours of sleep or less are functioning just like someone who stayed up forty-eight hours straight after getting eight hours of sleep on a regular basis (Zuckermam). For teens who have to wake up at six or earlier in the morning to get ready and drive to school at seven forty-five in the morning is too much (Zuckerman).

Falling asleep in class makes it impossible to learn, but that is not the biggest problem for sleepy students. More common, less noticeable, and therefore much more of a problem is that students who do not get eight to nine hours of sleep find it more difficult to concentrate in class and their ability to remember what they read or hear is impaired.
Research shows that tired adolescents and adults are also cranky, easily frustrated, and overly emotional. This can contribute to constant tension between family members. Teens who get less sleep are also more likely to be overweight or obese. When teens do not get enough sleep, their bodies go through hormone changes that make them more tired and hungry. When they are more tired, they often exercise less and drink more sugar-filled caffeinated drinks. This starts a vicious cycle of weight gain, which leads to stress, which leads to sleeping less (Zuckerman).
Students need to get up before dawn to get to school on time. They have trouble paying attention in class and may be short-tempered with teachers and other students. After school, they may have a job, athletics, or spend time with their friends. After dinner, they may finally do their homework, maybe feeling awake and productive, but unfortunately not, so it takes longer. Continue with their part-time job, or still being with friends. By sundown, when they should be going to sleep to get the eight to nine hours of sleep they need, they are wide awake. So staying up until ten thirty or later maybe much later seeming like a smart idea, guarantees that they will be sleep deprived when they get up before sunrise the next day (Zuckerman).
Sleep is technically food for the brain. During sleep, important body functions and brain activity occur so skipping sleep can be harmful, even deadly. Particularly if you are behind the wheel, then very deadly. It can make the person look bad, it may make them feel moody, and perform poorly. Sleepiness can make it hard with getting along with family and friends, hurt your grades at school, and make it difficult on the court or on the field. So remember: A brain that is hungry for sleep will get it, even when you least expect it. Drowsiness and falling asleep at the wheel cause more than one hundred thousand car crashes every year. When not enough sleep is gotten, you are more likely to have an accident, injury and/or illness (Teens and Sleep).
