My Strengths and Weaknesses in Communication Skills
Within daily life, we are constantly communicating with the people around us. This reflective writing will shed some light onto some of my strengths and weaknesses in four different categories. They include public speaking, verbal communication, nonverbal communication, and communication through technology.
My strengths in public speaking include being able to speak about specific points that I have thoroughly researched and be able to determine common ground with my audience so that they can better understand the topic I am speaking about. My weaknesses in this category include sometimes talking to fast and speak about points that may not be all that important to my speech. I also tend to get really nervous when speaking in front of people that I know, which in turn makes me speak faster making it more difficult for the audience to understand the importance of my topic.
My strengths within the category of verbal communication with peers differs from my verbal communication with family or significant others or anyone else. While with peers, I tend to listen more and allow them to vent more. While I am with significant others or family I add personal stories that show my experience in the topic. If I am in the presence of someone new, I am quieter and just like to observe people and the way that they communicate so that I know their style. Some of my weaknesses in this category can include the fact that sometimes I have trouble knowing the right time to add important information to the conversation, and also sometimes I am much too quiet which can inhibit me from making new acquaintances.

In daily nonverbal communication, my strengths include looking interested in the topic that is being spoken about even if it does not always pertain what I am interested in. My weaknesses are while with peers and family members I manage to avert my eyes from theirs because I feel awkward looking into their eyes for an extended period of time. While with strangers and significant others and strangers I have a habit of portraying a nervous person by twisting my hands together or playing with my hair.
My strengths in communication through technologies such as Facebook and texting are being able to think through all the possible interpretations that can be made from what I typing and from being able to attempt to type it in such a way that only the way to interpret it is the way that I want it to be. Another of my strengths in this area is the knowledge of when it is time to go face to face communication. Sometimes it is just better to call the person, or if it's not too far away go to this person directly. However, some of my weaknesses in this area include the fact that I sometimes am too lazy to think of all the possible interpretations and the way that I want the message to be interpreted is confused and due to this, feelings can get hurt.
As you can see, this paper goes through a few details of my communication skills. Hopefully as this class progresses, I will be able to add a few more to the list. The model that I think makes the best fit to my life is the linear model of communication. This model is the simplest of all the models and it explains that there is an information source which sends the signal to the receiver; however the signal is not always transmitted right away because there is sometimes a distraction that slows down or messes up the message before it gets to the receiver.
