When Is The Scarlet Letter Set
The Scarlet Letter is set in the Puritan community of seventeenth-century Boston. The novel opens with the story of Hester Prynne, a young woman who has been convicted of adultery and must wear a scarlet letter “A” on her chest as a sign of her shame. Hester is forced to stand on the scaffold in the town square for three hours, while the townspeople jeer and mock her. Hester's husband, Roger Chillingworth, arrives in town soon after her punishment is over. Chillingworth is a bitter, vengeful man who is determined to find the man with whom Hester committed adultery. Hester's daughter, Pearl, is born seven months after Hester's punishment. Pearl is a beautiful but wild child who is shunned by the townspeople. Hester is forced to live on the outskirts of town, in a small cottage. Chillingworth moves in with Hester and Pearl, and
