World Hunger Essay

The world ultimately has a variety of shades and the shade we view primarily depends on our surroundings. The world can reflect in one’s eyes as flawless, but in an other’s as internally flawed. At age 11, a college student requested that I draw a picture of how I viewed the world. Details within the picture show homeless people digging through the garbage for food despite the fact that there are eateries in the area, a woman walking the street in an effort to make money, as well as a mural on the wall of an alley displaying the word “peace.” Although I created this artwork six years ago, it still ignites the same vision of how I view the world today. Today’s society reflects a mass amount of people without homes and without food. Moreover, an increasing roar for peace.

The rising amount of homeless people in society today is taken very lightly. The image shows a small group of people in the alley in need of shelter and food. Although the people drawn in this image can be found in person throughout the alleys of Chicago today, they can also be found elsewhere. Lack of shelter and food is extremely prominent in Africa. According to wfp.org, “Sub-Saharan Africa is the region with the highest prevalence (percentage of population) of hunger; One person in four there is undernourished.” Therefore, not only is homelessness a vital issue in Chicago, but in society worldwide. My surroundings for the past 17 years of my life have played a major role in these standpoints. In addition, the lack of food levels equally with the lack of shelter worldwide.

World Hunger has affected citizens largely. Although the televised ads for world hunger are primarily in regards to African children, world hunger matters in other places as well. The people in need, within the image, are being displayed as “dumpster-divers.” The usual role of a “dumpster-diver” is one who scouts out a variety of trash cans in hope of finding food. This specific part of the image, as well as the eateries displayed in the image, depict a vital part of poverty in the world today. “Poverty is the principle cause of world hunger today” (world hunger.org). The poverty in this image can specifically be seen occurring in a variety of neighborhoods in Chicago. Moreover, the idea of world hunger can be seen more broadly across the world.

Although the efforts to stop world hunger and homelessness continue, there remains a roar for peace and hope. The mural withholding the word “peace” serves as an example of hope in an impoverished community. In today’s society, African American men and boys are being killed by police. However, the several movements created to lift up these impoverished communities serve as the example of hope within times of struggle. The thrive for peace and hope play a vital role in the reflection of the world today.

The rising struggles in the world serve as a catalyst for hope and peace today. Although today’s society is constantly changing, its issues remain consistent. Therefore, it is vital for citizens worldwide to understand society’s issues and work to cease them. Although nothing can truly be perfect, the cease of today’s issues can make the world a better place.
