Growing up I didn’t have a good idea on what literature was about, but over many years of schooling teachers taught me the value of literature as it relates the work of art contributed to the author's experiences or imagination from their perspective. At such a young age I did not enjoy reading. Sometimes I’ve forced myself to read novels but on the other hand literature was soothing as it told a real story that I could relate to, at the moment of tragic or dramatic events.

For example The Great Depression was the most stressful time period for Americans. Literature gives us a described view into how people lived during this dark period of time. It’s like putting ourselves in their shoes as we read the the dark cold night sky with the smell of burning coal throughout the polluted streets, and the homeless protesting like their lives depended on it. Literature brings us the true value of storytelling as if it’s a message from a past that we can relate to. Today’s literature gives the reader insights into the history and the different cultures on our planet. It allows us to open our minds to different concepts like love, war, and justice.

Literature is like a time travel machine as it provides an open window into the past, it allows the reader to understand and see how their ancestors lived back in their day. Readers can also see where their own people came from and how the country they live in became what it is today. As I reflect in today’s society, literature still holds high value as it doesn’t allow us to forget who we are as people, and namely our heritage. The study of literature is important in my opinion because as a students it helps me understand more depending on course subject and allows me to be able to visualize what is said when reading literature. Without the study of literature we wouldn’t have creative writers or real storytelling.

We also can’t get literature confused with today’s movies because entertaining is considered literary text and it’s two different things. I think most movies are made up or that is changed the storyline of literature writings as if it’s false information. It’s like lying to us, so literature is again important to study and to understand people’s real perspectives on life based on the subjects they write about. A few writers I admire are Jon Krakauer, he wrote a book entitled, “Into The Wild”. It is a non-fiction book based on a young man named Christopher Mccandless who came from a wealthy family and decided to put himself in the wilderness to survive with all the resources around him.

I really admire this writer because everything was a true story and he accomplished this because Christopher Mccandless had left behind his diary after his tragic death. Another author I admire is Laura Hillenbrand, she wrote a book entitled, “Unbroken An Olympian's Journey From Airman to Castaway to Captive”. This book is a non-fiction survival story during the time of World War II in Japan. I admire the author because she had actually met Louis Zamperini. The surviving olympian track star at a Japanese concentration camp.

In conclusion, literature shares with us the value of storytelling. Every culture has its own story with moral values, education, and historic heroes. From our class discussion, I’ve looked through my peers observations on their view of literature. I found it interesting that many students had thought of literature as art, as a form of creating, a bigger picture. I agree literature is a work of art full of experiences, creative, and emotion into writing. Our world’s culture is recorded in literature with different perspectives and creative minds to bring literature to life. Literature in a sense is a mirror or window into the souls who write it for the period of time they lived. So our enjoyment of it depends on our ability to recognize our place in relation to it.
