The Struggles and Triumphs of Helen Keller

Helen Keller was an extraordinary woman that had an illness that made her blind and deaf when she was young. Helen would have this illness for the rest of her life. Helen didn't want her disabilities to stop her from doing things as a normal child and she didn't want people to look down on her. She believes in herself to accomplish her dreams and goals.

Helen was born on (June 27, 1880) in Tuscumbia, Alabama. At the age of two years old she was diagnosed with an illness that made her blind and deaf for the rest of her life, when Helen was seven years old, she and the cook's young daughter Martha Washington invented sixty sign languages to communicate with each other. As Helen was sitting on the porch outside her house on (March 3, 1887) she felt approaching footsteps that she put her hands out and felt for the face of that person and that would be her teacher, Anne Sullivan coming to teach her and stay with her. Helen and her teacher Anne started learning how to finger play and they spelled "DOLL." It was in the summer of (1887) that Helen started to learn every object that she had touched and learned its names and uses.

As Helen was getting older, She started to talk, and the first thing she asked a question was "What is love?" that was when Ms. Sullivan showed that love is in the heart and put Helen's hand on her heart! It was a very important event for Helen's life (1888 May), Helen, Her mom Katherine, and Miss Sullivan all were on their way to Boston on a train. For Helen to attend the Perkins Institution for the Blind in Boston as Helen, Katherine Helen's mom and Ms. Sullivan arrive at the school Helen made some friends that were also blind but not deaf!

As the Perkins Institution school closed for the summer; Helen, Ms. Sullivan, and Mrs. Hopkins a friend from the Perkins Institution traveled to a cabin on a boat, and Helen had never been to the beach before as they arrive at their cabin they put their bathing suits on to head to the beach and Helen never been in the water before so she decided she would put her feet in the ocean shore and she did and she started to like the water!

It was the (winter of 1892) that made Helen's childhood downhearted. Helen had written a story when she was at home during the autumn after she had learned to speak in the (spring of 1890). Helen had written a book so she can send the book that she wrote back off to her school that is Perkins Institution for the Blind. She sent the book to Mr. Anagnos of Perkins. The story of her book was called "The Frost King". She made this book about her and her family why they were on vacation in the autumn and winter at their cabin in Alabama! Helen had made Mr. Anagnos "The Frost King" book for Mr. Anagnos birthday and she shipped it off to Mr. Anagnos so he can open it on his birthday and be surprised that Helen wrote him a book for his birthday.

But when Mr. Anagnos open the gift that Helen had shipped to him he liked her book and then he publishes Helen's book in one of the Perkins Institution reports. After he did that when he said that Helen was plagiarism that someone had read her two stories that were similar to her's and the names to those two stories were "The Frost Fairies" by Miss Margaret, and the last one was "Birdie and His Friends" by Miss T. Canby. Then after they said Helen was plagiarism Miss Margaret's book "The Frost Fairies" put her in court and they were having a case about whether

Helen's book was plagiarized but it wasn't so Helen was very scared and excited that the court said Helen was innocent. After all, the mess had happened at her school (Perkins Institution for the Blind), after she returned home a year later, she began to start writing sketches of her life and Miss Sullivan helped her write her story that will be about her life. In the year (1893) Helen and Ms. Sullivan travel to Washington during the inauguration of President Cleveland and then they visited Niagara and the World's Fair that was in Canada that year.

Why they were in Niagara (March 1893) people were impressed by Helen's that they were asking "What does this beauty or that music mean to you? You cannot see the waves rolling up the beach or hear their roar. What do they mean to you? In the summer of (1893), Helen and Ms. Sullivan had visited the World's Fair in Canada with Dr. Alexander Graham Bell. Helen would imagine that she made a trip around the world and she saw many wonders from the uttermost parts of the earth marvels of invention, treasuries of industry and skill, and all the activities of human life passed under her fingertips.

Before it had turned October of 1893 Helen had studied various subjects by herself in a more or less desultory manner. Now it's the summer of (1894) Helen attended a meeting at Chautauqua of the American Association to Promote the Teaching of Speech to the Deaf. It was an arrangement for Helen to go to the Wright-Humason School for the Deaf in New York City. Helen had started her new school in October of 1894 and Ms. Sullivan was with her.

In conclusion, Helen became known as a successful blind and deaf woman that travels around the world and inspires others that they can do things even if they have a condition or don't have a condition. Helen was known for having an illness at the age of two years that made her blind and deaf for the rest of her life and became an author of "Story of My Life" by Helen Keller. Helen didn't want her disability to stop her, so she learned how to communicate with the people around her, with her fingertips (fingerplay), she also learned how to talk, and by that she wrote her book "The Story of My Life" she went to thirty-seven countries around the world and impressed others that even known she has an illness for the rest of her life she still was able to know where she was and who she was around by going to school, having faith in herself, and believing in herself!

She wrote letters to the people that helped her learn how to speak different languages and more, which helped her become successful, in spirit, an awesome, amazing, and inspirational woman that everyone knows even to this day! Helen passed away on "June 1, 1968" she was eighty-seven years old. Everyone will always remember or learn about Helen Keller because she never gave up on herself or others around her, she believed in herself that she could do it and others believed in her that she got this and she can do it.
