Every workplace in every industry has its own form of safety and regulation codes to get the job done properly. Electricians are no exception when it comes to these rules in residential, commercial, or industrial wiring. These rules are kept in the nfpa codes and standards book, and are relay to electricians all over the United States exactly what they can and can't do when on the job. The national electrician's code book was first established in 1987 by the (NFPA) or the national fire protection agency. The reason that it was created was that 5 independent organizations wanted to get together to discuss the safety measures for fires, electrical, and sprinklers.
They each sent one representative to the state of New York to discuss these matters and by the end of it they created articles for a new regulatory system; thus the NFPA was born for the purpose of preventing hazardous fires. One of the first things they did was to combine various electrical codes used at the time and combine them all into one uniform standard. They pulled the most effective criteria from each of the 5 codes and created a rough draft of the NEC. They then proceeded to send this rough draft all over the world so that reviewers could give feedback and other suggestions to make better what they previously met up.
After receiving enough input the committee met back together, took all of the good suggestions from the reviews, and created the national electrical code of 1897. It is important to note that these codes are not bound by federal law; but, are used to standardize the practice of safe electrical work. The code book can be amended and altered in order to adhere to regional regulations. Since 1974 there have been 15 code regulations making it the least amended model code. The code is updated Every 3 years to ensure it reflects the latest updates in safety technology. Local and state Governments do not have to follow the codes and regulations of the NEC, but they do anyway because they want to ensure the safety of the people inside of them.

It usually takes a couple of years for the local authorities to adopt the updates in the NEC which allow the local code reviewers to gradually make changes to the codes making it fair for home and builders. Although the NEC is the most universally modeled code in the United States, some states don’t adopt some portions of the code. I firmly believe that it is of the utmost importance to follow the code books regulation while working on any job. The code book is there for a reason; to ensure that after a job is done, your work is safe for the people around it at all times. It also makes sure that if there is ever an electrical problem with your work, you or anyone else working on your handiwork have an easier and safer time trying to fix the electrical fault. The code also ensures that your work is approved by supervisors or inspectors.
