My Great Grandma, Dorothy O'Brien, has been the most positive and influential person I know. She was nineteen and raising her adopted children, while her husband was overseas fighting in World War II. My Great Grandma is my Michigan hero because she is a hard worker, active in the church community, and is a positive role model.
My Great Grandma is a very hard worker. This summer, during the hottest week of July, she sat outside weeding her garden wearing no sun protection except her straw hat. She said that the only way her grass would be weeded properly was if she did it herself. Unfortunately, because of her intense work ethic this, she was hospitalized from dehydration. My Great Grandma lives alone, next door to her cousins and every night makes sure there is a well cooked meal for them to eat. These are just some of the heroic qualities my Great Grandma possesses. She makes me want to work hard, do well in school, and follow in her footsteps. Great Grandma lives across from her church. She used to walk to church every morning. Because it is too hard for her to walk long distances right now, this tradition has discontinued. She is very committed to her church community and has donated time, energy, and home-made bread to help keep the church running. My Great Grandma is also my hero, but she gives back and helps support her community. I have learned through her that it is important to give back to your community.
After her sister-in law and brother-in-law died, she and my Great Grandpa adopted and raised their two children. She moved on in life, always having a glass half-full attitude even in tough situations. She does not judge people, and always looks for the good in people. At 94 years old she still has a very positive view on her health. She is starting to have - health issues. When she was in the hospital recently with a heart infection, she told us to not worry about her. Her only request was to, "Call Dottie (her cousin) and tell her that I am fine, and not to worry about me." Great Grandma always puts other people in front of her needs and never just thinks about herself. This is one quality I believe every hero should have. I want to be as positive as I can because I know if she can make a positive outlook on most situations I can too.
