When I was a child, I used to sit on the couch and watch my favorite superheroes on TV, like Spiderman, the Hulk, and especially Batman. But to me, the real superhero was you. You were always there to take care of any problem I had, whether it was a scraped knee or a broken toy. You fought off the bad guys just like superheroes fight villains. In my eyes, you were as smart as Tony Stark, as strong as the Hulk, and as brave as Spiderman.

As I grew up, I learned in school about the distinction between protagonists and antagonists, and gradually realized that the labels of hero and villain were subjective and dependent on individual perspectives. The line between good and bad began to blur for me. During my teenage years, I faced a great deal of adversity, much of which I had to confront alone. I believed that if I could overcome these challenges independently, I could be a hero like you were to me when I was a child.

However, as I developed my own interests and beliefs that differed from yours, my view of you as a perfect and divine figure began to dissipate. Our disagreements piled up so high that they became visible to the rest of the family. We argued more and more, and our hostility towards one another grew to the point where we seemed like enemies. As a typical teenager, I fought for my independence and distanced myself from you. You, who I had once idolized, became a person I did not want to become.

During my sophomore year, things between us reached an all-time low. We decided to go out for dinner to try and address our problems, hoping that a single meal could fix everything. Sitting across from each other, with our favorite burgers in front of us, we both became hostile and aggressive.

I opened up to you, pouring out my problems and vulnerabilities, but I felt like you were offended and defensive. As the meal drew to a close, the tension was so thick it felt like nothing could break it. You looked at me and asked, "so you're good now, right?" as if my problems had been magically resolved. I knew things were bad, but I lied and said "yes." At that moment, you became the Joker to my Batman. You no longer felt like a mother, but like a villain.

As the prospect of college looms closer, I can't help but feel a sense of sadness. In just a year's time, I'll be leaving home and we'll be physically apart. The thought of this reality breaks my heart, knowing that our time together under the same roof is limited. Soon, I'll be able to fully embrace my independence and won't have to face the constant opposition that has defined our relationship.

Over time, I used to dread the idea of visiting my family, knowing that it would mean facing the reality of our separation. Yet, as I sit here writing this essay, something has clicked within me. I have realized that it is not our disagreements that should be driving us apart. On the contrary, it is the differences in our perspectives that make our relationship so special and one-of-a-kind. All of the animosity and anger I used to feel towards you has vanished, and all I want now is to be close to you once more.

I yearn for our old relationship where we used to fight the world together. I don't see myself as the introverted child who used to sit quietly and finish his homework. I see myself as a young adult about to embark on a new journey, and I'm ready to face it head-on, no matter how difficult it may be, because I know my partner is always there to support me. My superhero costumes and pajamas have been replaced by a graduation gown, and my comics and cartoons have been replaced by textbooks and essays. Despite all the changes, one thing remains constant.
