Perpetua Writing About Her Dreams

Perpetua writes about her visions and dreams as she sees them in her mind. She goes on to explain them of herself and Felecity. The martydoms that Perpetua went through as a woman truly inticed me. For in this day and time we still feel that a woman cannot speak or phropesey. However; Perpetua not only dreamt but she prophesied.

Acts 2:17-19 states: "In the last days, saith God, I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh: And your sons and daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. And on my servants, and on my handmaidens, I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy; and I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke."

Perpetua was 22 years old and was a catechumen. One of the most brutual things Perpetua had to go through in her martydom was to be martyed with an infant child. She was thrown into prison and her child was brung to her to nurse even as she was being prepared to be presented in the ampitheatre to be thrown to the dragon and or beast. Even more astounding was the fact that Felecity was pregnant and put through martydom.

In Perpetua's first vision she saw a golden ladder of high height in which she saw a dragon who awaited those that ascended it. The dragon called to her and said he was waiting for her but in her dream she told the dragon that In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ he could not harm her. She trodded upon his head and went up the ladder to the garden. She describes that in the midst of the garden was a "white-haired man sitting in the dress of a shepherd, of a large stature, milking sheep; and standing around were many thousand white-robed ones." pg. 21 He welcomes her and gives her food to eat. When she awoke from the dreams she still had the taste of sweetness in her mouth. She was stripped and arrayed as though she was a gladiator force and degraded to fight like a man. As she goes in and out of these dreams and visions they are symbolical to the actual myrdom she had to go through. In my mind she is disgraced and maryted like Christ, the only difference is that she was not resurrected.

As she tells the story of Felicitas, she is eight months pregnant and the favour of God is also upon her. As she and Felicitus pray for three days, Felicitas delivers and baby girl whom her sister brought up as her daughter. Perpetua and Felicitas were both disgraced and matyred.

Perpetua somehow wants to taste the pain and agony of death, she was pierced between the ribs, and placed the sword of the glaitor to her own throat. In her visions she wanted to prove that she had the will to die the way in whch she chose. To agive up ones life for Christ was a blessed sacrifice. For even in Perpetua's dreams and visions she both dreamed and fought the battle knowing that Christ was on her side.
