Mozart was born on January 27, 1756, in Salzburg, Austria. He was the eldest child of Leopold and Anna Maria Mozart. Leopold was a successful composer, violinist, and assistant concertmaster at the Salzburg court. His sister, Nannerl, was born two years after Wolfgang. Mozart showed signs of great musical talent at a very young age. He began composing simple pieces by the age of five and performed for European royalty by the age of six. Mozart's father recognized his son's prodigious talent and devoted his life to providing Wolfgang with the best musical education possible. The Mozart family traveled extensively throughout Europe, and Wolfgang had the opportunity to perform for and meet many of the most prominent musicians of his day.Mozart's early works include several symphonies, concertos, and operas. He composed his first opera, Bastien und Bastienne, in 1768, when he was just twelve years old. In 1777, Mozart completed his greatest opera, Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute). This work is considered one of the greatest operas ever written and is still performed today.Mozart continued to compose prolifically throughout his life, producing works in nearly every musical genre. He married Constanze Weber in 1782 and had six children, only two of whom survived to adulthood. Mozart's health began to decline in 1791, and he died on December 5, 1791, at the age of 35.
