In my personal experiences in nursing school, I cultivated a missional and public culture that is characterized by a welcoming spirit and loving service to all. I ministered to patients and interacted with people from all walks of life, some of whom may experience Christianity for the first time at the university. At Anderson University, I learned to integrate faith, learning, work, and service in an effort to honor God in all that I do. With humility, I encouraged others to join me in these endeavors, to uphold the University’s mission of developing individuals’ character, servant leadership, and cultural engagement in the spirit of Christ-like attitude. My identity and mission have remained deeply rooted in faith in Jesus Christ, who provided a way to follow in the servanthood ministry. As the university’s community is a product of the wonderful diversity of traditions and denominations that have grown out of the roots of biblical.

Christianity, I stood on Jesus’ shoulders to work diligently with love for others to reflect Christ-like character as evidence in the profession of nursing. The university, in the midst of this rich diversity, has consistently cultivated unity around the core doctrines and common practices of the faith, which became important pillars for healthcare professionals. My work within the community and as a healthcare worker flows from a vibrant faith and concern to honor and emulate Jesus Christ in all I say and do. My Christian convictions, Christ-focused curriculum and service beyond the classroom provided a foundation that is the bedrock of my community and basis for working together with my peers and other healthcare workers. This foundation simultaneously serves as a reminder of who I strive to be. This one foundation continually guides our learning and working communities toward faithfulness, excellence and service to God and our neighbors.

The passion and work of Christ was explicit in the nursing profession during my training. As a student nurse, I observed nurses exhibiting empathy, being attentive with a positive demeanor, and interacting and caring while tending to patients. It was evident that these attributes were genuinely displayed and dispensed and the impact on the patient’s well-being was noted. From observation, patients seemed more trusting of nurses, established strong bonds as well as being more comfortable when nurses displayed these attributes. I will not forget the reactions of patients who received kind words and deeds from nurses. I observed senior frequently sitting and reading with a visually impaired retired professional even at times when her shift ended. He referred to her as his special angel and look forward to their daily interactions.

Evidence of Christ's passion and work was displayed by many nurses in their interaction with us student nurses. I can attest to the nurturing, mentoring and guidance of the preceptors and other experience nurses given to me and my peers. I was made to feel like a team member whose leader would tenuously guide her flock. I am appreciative of the guidance and mentorship given to me in spite of my level of maturity and experience as a practicing healthcare worker, by nurses who are younger than me. My concerns and questions were addressed in a manner that made me feel as if said concerns really mattered and I was seen as part of “the team”.

Christ's passion and work involved a great deal of advocacy. Professional nursing similarly involves advocating for other nurses, patients and the general public when necessary. I recall a student nurse being castigated for leaving a bed unlock and a patient unattended to. Despite vehemently denying the accusation, she was not believed. On becoming aware of the situation, a senior nurse stated in her defense that it was not possible for her to have done so as both of them exited the room after ensuring that a safety features were activated and handover was done with another nurse. Professionalism was exhibited by nurses while interacting with other health care workers. I was pleased with the level of humility and respect displayed among the nurses.

The worldview I subscribe to is Christianity, on which I base my life decisions, values, and beliefs. The Christian ideal of loving others as myself is the basis of my caring attitude toward my patients. In the field of nursing, as I cater for the needs of my patients, developing several relationships, by exemplifying Watson’s Theory of Caring; a theory to advocate that caring is essential to nursing practice. My relations with patients help them physically, mentally, and spiritually, as caring results improved patient outcomes and experiences. I commit to affirming moral truth in a loving and merciful way that helps rather than hurts, by building up rather than tearing down through harsh judgment and self-righteousness, emulating evidence-based practices in nursing
