Writing is an art form, one passed from history onto history, ideology to differing ideology. From Ulysses to Bradbury, it flows in the mainstream of time. Even still, writing is universal; it is felt, understood. It can change lives, bring nations closer, preform acts that strengthen the mind. Writing can shape life and mold it to propel their art to the forefront. Writing is a superpower, much like our colorful idols in which we as kids would call our heroes. Many wield its power, but only a select few master the weapon.

Imagine for a second; you’re in a world where lies are told, where the only way to fight fire is through pyre, and where your own government is against you. Imagine that for your whole life all you’ve seen was ignorant violence with no seeming cease. Smoke was clouds for you and rain substituted for shrapnel in the darkest days. A volcanic mountain erupted in you and it was time for things to stop, once and for all. Imagine all it took for life to stop its belligerence were words on paper. With strokes of a pen and not swords you’d changed history, for the better, and ensured that the people coming after you would live a greater life than you ever could. That’s what writing can do. It can change things; I’ll explain my reasoning for why I myself want to become a writer and how I’ll achieve it.

I have read multiple books in my fourteen years, stories like The Magic Treehouse, Holes, and The Watsons Go to Birmingham, 1963. When I reached adolescence my intake of more cogent and nuanced writing grew with my age as I entered AIG, where class conversations were the regularity. It introduced me to the importance of writing and why we should try to preserve its luster. The novels and poetry opened my mind to new meanings of what it means to be a writer, some including Nancy Farmer’s House of the Scorpion, which introduced an idea of humanity and its ever-searching quest for equality, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, speaking on the American youth of the 1960s and the social class state of their lives.

My personal favorite of these was Fahrenheit 451, written by Ray Bradbury in the 50s of the U.S. It instilled the theory of just how integral the pencil can be. Set in a society of stagnant growth, the main character is given the choice of running from the government’s corrupt lasso of control or submitting under its grip. The novel made me see why I want to become one; to create history or watch it unfold.

It starts at a young age and builds up. Years of skill-sharpening and better understanding of writing leads to a better writer. As a writer, it can be difficult sometimes to understand your audience. Sometimes your writing isn’t what they’re looking for. Skills that can help in this literary experience are fields in journalism, communication, and English (U.S. Dept. of Labor). Journalism allows you to get a more analytical aspect (when completing important reports, use wisely!) on topics and direct on-the-nose information.

Communication is the basis for writing, it helps you with gaining a rough idea of dialogue. Don’t use their exact words, it usually doesn’t sound the most appealing; we like to stutter and say “um” a lot (Daily Writing Tips). A good understanding of grammar in an author is a sure-fire way for your work to be seen. Nobody enjoys reading a welter of words on paper, not exactly. With the advent of technology, you’re less likely to make typos but it’s always a huge bonus if you’ve programmed yourself to make correct grammatical choices.

The work environment for a writer can be a rigorous one. Some spend hours on end trying to write just one great chapter. According to The Mission, acclaimed author Stephen King says he writes six pages each day, while famed poet Maya Angelou spends about seven hours working on stories (Oshin). Most writers set their own hours on when to scribe, which is the beauty of writing; you aren’t entitled to a schedule if you don’t want to be, although some freelance writers find themselves constantly flipping through different ideas and some even look for jobs in the first place (U.S. Dept. of Labor).

For some, to become a writer one must go to college. I’ve found that Emerson college in Boston boasts the best writing program in the country for novelists and poets alike. Authors like Seth Graname-Smith, who wrote titles like Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, came from the college and gained massive publicity with their works. Its ideology best put by Emerson student Maya Kaczor goes that ”any piece can be salvaged and made into something to be proud of” (Brown).

I’ve also found some of the best places for authors to live in America. These places include San Diego, which has good climate, laid-back moods, and beaches galore, though also expensive living conditions and barely any real homestayers that you can build connections with. Chicago is an affordable city but a cold one in the winters. Philadelphia’s got a friendly freelance scene and Philly cheesesteaks (a pro in and of itself!) but the wage taxes can lead your money to be a bit in shambles. On to Boston where the freelance and content marketing is exceptional, though it does house expensive courters and leaves barely any parking or laundry for apartments. Finally, we look at Durham, North Carolina, where southern food and businesses are plentiful and the lifestyle is affordable. It does have sweltering summers, high crime rates, and is designed more for automotive transport than anything else (Siemasko).

The salary of authors fluctuates significantly. J.K. Rowling, for example, gained $95 million in 2017 thanks to the ever-fan-expanding world of Harry Potter (Cuccinello). An average annual wage for authors in May 2018 looked like this: Low; $31,700, Median; $62,170, and High; $121,670 (U.S. Dept. of Labor). Depending on your situation and what publishers you work with, your wages can be very luxurious, if that’s what you’re looking for.

Some similar occupations referring to being a writer include jobs such as Announcers, Technical Writers, Editors, Reporters, Correspondents, Broadcast News Analysts, and Public Relations Specialists (U.S. Dept. of Labor). Most of these jobs require a Bachelor’s degree to do them full-time for employers.

So that would be my thesis for why writing is important and why it means so much to me. Writings are the records of those whose bodies will long be gone, their face long forgotten, names barely a memory, but writing very much remembered. We should rejoice and see writing as this, as a way for humankind to sustain longevity and be reborn whenever we see those words on paper. We should strive to live life in its most creative form and respect the artistry involved. There’s so much out that door for us to see, capture, and love.
