The fairytale Beauty & The Beast is one of the most commonly known children's stories. All though it really doesn't seem like it shows much depth, it has a lot of symbolic references. This story is all about finding someone that makes you feel as if you aren't yourself. The thought of having someone love you means so much to a human being. Knowing your looks don't matter and having someone love you for you and only you. It's not about what a person has to offer material wise, but emotionally. The moral of the story is hidden beneath the surface. Digging deep enough you will find the moral is, What's on the outside doesn't always define what's on the inside. In this story it is shown when Beauty slowly comes to love The Beast even though he isn't what you call husband material. Beauty is forced to live with the Beast due to her father disrespecting the Beast. After living with the Beast, Beauty starts to see the true beauty within the Beast. In the Beauty and The Beast there is many different types of symbolism.
One of the main things that means something in this story is the rose. The rose represents love, which starts the conflict of the whole story. Beauty asks her father for a rose, because she knows her father can afford it. Ironically it's the thing that costs him the most, his youngest daughter. The rose also represents the Beast's last chance at love. One example of irony would be the example of the rose. Beauty asks for a rose in the first place because she knows her father will be able to afford it, as she knows her family is not very wealthy. However, Beauty's father ends up paying the most for her gift than the gifts her sisters asked for, as he is required to give up his daughter in exchange for the flower and his life. The rose also shows irony, because it's the rose that starts the beginning of their relationship. It also is the reason they stay together. This all ties in with symbolism, because the rose also represent the Beasts life and his last chance at love. It's also pretty ironic that a guy that was so worried about his looks, and wealth turns into an ugly beast. This story emphasizes that a woman's desire to think that what is on the surface is the most important thing, but it's obviously not the most important thing. It shows powerfully, that the deeper you go and the more you discover about someone, the more meaning and value you will find. Not everyone has such a great appearance on the outside, but most people have a beautiful and unique inside.
In the story character development is shown when Beauty starts to develop feeling for the Beast. In the beginning Beauty has no type of feelings for the Beast, and as she starts to see his true personality she comes to love him in a way she couldn't imagine. She comes to realize that everyone deserves the right to have someone love them. The Beast develops, because he starts to think about others. In the beginning he doesn't really know how to treat Beauty, he kind of doesn't understand that she has feelings. Towards the end he starts to understand how to treat her, and that's when she comes to love him for him. To children the story may just seem like a typical fairy tale with a happy ending, which it is, but in reality there's more to it. As you dig deeper you see that there are many literary components and characters developing, making it more than just an ordinary fairytale. The moral of the story, however, to put it simply: in every Beast, there is always a Beauty.
