This essay tells about two lyrical geniuses: Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.
The music industry is known for rewarding artists who show great dedication to their craft with long-lasting success on the Billboard charts. It's impossible for music enthusiasts not to recognize some of the most celebrated and admired musicians, such as Mariah Carey and the late Whitney Houston, who have both achieved remarkable success in the music industry. These two talented women have remained consistent in their work since the 1990s, showcasing their incredible vocal abilities throughout the peak of their careers. Despite being close friends and supportive of each other's work, they have also competed against each other on several occasions. There are so many instances in which they beat each other.
To begin with, when it comes to comparing the accomplishments of Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey takes the lead. This is due to the fact that many equally talented artists such as Destiny's Child, Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, among others have mentioned her as being an inspiration to them, largely due to her powerful vocals. Additionally, Mariah Carey is widely recognized as an industry icon, as evidenced by the numerous remixes of her songs that have been done as a tribute to her.

The RIAA reports that Mariah Carey has sold approximately 63 million albums, while her counterpart has sold 55 million albums to date. Mariah Carey has been able to sell approximately 160 million records worldwide. Although Houston’s album, "Bodyguard," is a certified 17x Platinum by the RIAA, most of Mariah’s albums, starting from "Daydream," "Music Box," and her Christmas album, have recorded some of the largest sales over a long period.
While both of these musical legends will go down in history on the Billboard charts, Mariah Carey has achieved 6 No.1 albums (2 of which went Diamond according to RIAA), 24 Top 10 hits (18 of which topped the charts), and the longest running No.1 hit song in history. Whitney Houston, on the other hand, has 11 total No.1’s, the most consecutive No.1 singles in a row, seven times. Mariah is also considered a renowned international artist compared to Houston.
One reason for Mariah Carey's success in countries like Japan is her exceptional musicality and phrasing, which resonates well with the Japanese audience. In fact, three out of five of the best-selling albums in Japan belong to her. Similarly, her hit singles have gained immense popularity in many other countries, including Australia. While Whitney Houston's music may have had a weaker presence in the international market, her classic 90s hit single "I Will Always Love You" has remained popular for more than three decades.
In summary, both Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston are legendary musicians, but personally, I prefer listening to Mariah Carey over Whitney Houston. This is because I admire Mariah's impeccable skills and commitment to her craft. Additionally, Mariah has shown herself to be a supportive figure in the industry, which is something I appreciate and would like to see more of. Therefore, as a listener, I feel compelled to show her my support.
