The author provides several situations, as to when means of torture are not only permissible, however, mandatory alike. Despite most ideologies claiming such techniques are never acceptable for use. These ideas, most certainly, contradict the normal views of such issues. Nonetheless, each point discussed is backed up entirely by comprehensive foundations of rational. By the exploration, of a few scenarios, the author unwittily showcases many instances, where torture would lead to better outcomes. Audiences are left with contrasting opinions of such ideas after the reading and analyzing of Levin's works.
The first of such cases, is titled "death". This scenario brings upon ideas of Utilitarianism if I do say so myself. This idea claims that choices should be made to please many people, rather the minority. In such cases described by the author, without the utilization of torture on the terrorist, millions will die. This is true, because the bomb would detonate before this man's due process would conclude. Therefore, the consequence of death is not enough to persuade the terrorist into revealing the information. The only strategy left in such cases is torture. The author shows that the millions of people are more important than the terrorist's treatment.
A popular claim that those make regarding the practice of torture is that it is barbaric. However, wouldn't the allowance of death upon these millions from the scenario be more barbaric in nature. This understanding is trying to be conveyed by the author, for those in opposition of these ideas. Levin is quite confident of his moral standings, and desires others to be educated on such issues alike. Torture, in and of itself is an evil practice, however, those who are involved with being tortured are also most often evil alike. In the case of this terrorist, the only justice that could come about would be through torturing him.

Levin then polls some mothers about similar circumstances. However, in these situations, the mother's child is kidnapped. All mothers stated that the use of torture in such instances would be acceptable. One mother, liberal in nature, stated, she would like to perform these torture methods on the terrorist who took her child. These results show, that personal relationship has a lot to do with the agreeing or disagreeing of torture methods. Which also goes back to Utilitarianism. When someone we are close to is part of the minority, we most likely want the choices geared towards them, rather the majority.
Levin establishes a shift in audience's opinions on such topics. At least, on a personal level I have found. These situations are only a few that were described in this article. Each were included in hopes to help reveal the many sides to these methods of torture. In these cases, these methods yielded better results for the many, rather the individual. To some degree, these mechanisms are requested by the terrorist. His actions are dishonest and immoral; therefore, he should expect the same sort of energy to be reversed back onto him. Karma is real, and is believed in most cultures and religions.
The ideas represented in this article appear to be highly credible. That is held true due to the degree of subjectivity included within such topics. Each individual is capable of creating their own interpretations and understandings of these ideas. Therefore, others may be opposed to such scenarios proposed by the author. Nonetheless, this information was a huge eye-opener to me. I say this because prior to reading these ideas, I would certainly conclude that torture is highly unethical. Now, my opinion has completely transformed. I feel that there are certainly situations that are dependent on such for a decent outcome.
