An Examination of the Characters in Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Jane Eyre: She is the main character of this story. She struggles as she tries to grow up in a family that despises her and treats her as they would a slave. She develops her own sense of independence at this time, which is later a major factor in her life. She falls in love with Mr. Rochester against her own will. She wants to be his equal-not dependent on him.

Mr. Rochester: The character that receives the inheritance of Thornfield Hall. He never lives at home because he has a past there that he would rather forget. He is often traveling in England and France. He is rich and handsome and he is a lot more affectionate than men really are (as he is created by a woman).

Jane works as a governess for Mr. Rochesters supposed daughter. Mr. Rochester is never at the residence because he likes to travel. When Jane finally meets Mr. Rochester she despises him at first, then softens and begins to love him for the exact reasons she hated him in the beginning. He is a wealthy man who is frivolous whereas Jane is frugal. This creates a clash between the two.

Every night strange instances happen. Like peoples beds lighting on fire and laughter proceeding it. No one knows who causes this and why it happens.

Mr. Rochester has a party at his hall and the guests stay for a month. He gets engaged to one of the rich, beautiful women, and Jane is disturbed by this. She has found that she loves him but cannot convey her feelings to him because she works for him as a governess and does not see herself in a position where she should. One night they are walking in the garden and Mr. Rochester asks Jane to marry him. She thinks he is mocking her, until he confesses that he has loved her for a long time and only became engaged to this other chick because he wanted to see her reaction and wondered if she would love him back.

A wedding date is set and they are at the chapel to get married. As they are walking in, some people are standing by and it turns out they claim that Mr. Rochester can not legally marry because he already has a wife. His wife is the psycho woman that terrorizes the hall every night. Jane feels hurt and betrayed because the only person she has ever allowed herself to love does this to her. She runs off and lives with some cousins for a while. She finds out that she is the inherent of one of her uncles estates and she becomes quite wealthy. One day when Jane is in the market she overhears someone speaking of Mr. Rochester.

She hears that there has been a fire at Thomfield Hall and it is ruined. Mr. Rochester is living with some cousins. Jane fights within herself for a while and finally decides that she still loves Mr. Rochester and wants to go see him. She goes to see him and they get married and have a son.

I believe that the author was trying to convey her feelings of passion and really going after what you want no matter what the consequences. If you really love something or someone you are willing to give up your own identity for them.

I need not to sell my soul to buy bliss. I have an inward treasure, which I can keep alive if all extraneous delights should be withheld. In this particular instance she is told this by a gypsy. I picked this quote because we often make ourselves happy for the short-term when it is the long-term that really matters.

I loved this book. It was a little bit to English for my taste, but I guess thats cultureright? I liked this book because the author has an excellent way of portraying inner struggles through her imagery and I loved the romance in it. I especially loved how the two characters were destined to be together and were helpless without each other and although things turned bad for a while, they were together in the end.
