A Short Review of Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, a Book by Annie Dillard
In chapter one of Pilgrim at Timber Creek, Dillard suggests that nature can be cruel and fearsome yet beautiful and mysterious. Dillard uses theoretical strategies such as exaggeration to help form accurate questions and she comes up with her own interpretation of cruelty to show her point of View. The author’s purpose is to persuade the reader to open their minds to better understand nature and show the impact nature has on creation. In doing this Dillard shows that nature is something that can be beautiful and inexplicable as long as we learn to see through the cruelty that it created. Dillard exaggerates her story by describing events she experienced in detail, for example, “I watched the taut, glistening skin on his shoulders, ruck and rumble.”
This adds not only a first person View but it also makes the reader ask questions such as “What happened?" and “Why did it happen?" Dillard helps further exaggerate her story by adding similes such as “Soon, part of his skin, formless as a pricked balloon” doing this Dillard helps create a vivid image of the event itself to help advance toward her goal of opening the reader’s mind. When Dillard is still forming her questions she also comes up with a few of her own interpretations to show the reader where she stands on the aspect of what she thinks of creation and the way it was created.
For example, “Cruelty is a mystery, and the waste of pain." She already makes her own assumptions about cruelty calling it a mystery which makes the reader interject their own idea about cruelty “there seems to be such a thing as beauty, a grace of wholly gratuitous" Dillard comes up with her own conclusion that beauty is within cruelty. Dillard expresses her ideas of cruelty by using similes, hyperboles, and overall the curiosity of the human mind as we all want to question the “how" and “why" cruelty is created not realizing what could be found in that cruelty. The author uses her experiences in nature to question creation which makes you think anything can be questioned
