When single parents embark to school can be very hard to leave worries at home; therefore, making hard to dedicate enough time to study and learn. Sometime, school is already hard on its own, especially when the graduation time is near. The last semester also can be very hard and feel like they need to drag themselves class after class because exhausted and maybe hopping the professor will give them some break that day, allowing them to catch -up with some assignment or some reading as a result.
Many time single parents students ask themselves if professors understand how hard is it for them to fulfill they duty as student when having others things in mind. Maybe those things are not important to professors, but they are necessary to single parents’ students’ living situation. Not being able to study cause not is able to turn -in assignments by the due date. Single parents students know professors understand, but because it’s the student’s choice to enroll in a degree plan for a better paying job in the future, therefore, the only break professors could give are some extensions and not all professors think the same way.
Some colleges or universities offer distance-learning courses trying to make easy on students that have other commitments in life, helping and making easier on single parents students to learn their degree from home instead that going to campus. The only difference between traditional and online course is students do not need to go to class on campus, but students still need to study even more because there is not a professor explaining the lecture and therefore there is not someone there for them to ask questions. Making learning more difficult, thus, students have to look for other ways to understand.
Yes, campuses offer several other ways as; tutors, library, or other services, but everything is offered during school hours making difficult to reach them, and for distance learning students, sometime gets impossible to get hold of services offered at all. If it does, it takes days to get an answer back. Do professors know that? Do professor understand that time the time it is not the student’s fault the assignment is not done? Some professors understand, but some really do not care causing students to drop the course or to fail.
Although, single parents students know in order to succeed financially in life they need to have a college education, and most of the time that’s true, but a college education comes with a price compare traditional students that go to college because it is the pathway their parents wants or because they want to follow their friends. Single parents students, have a lot more worries than traditional ones as to; support themselves and their depends, also, they need to work left with little or not time at all but still have to study to fulfill their commitment.
